Naarm-based musician Paul Bender (Hiatus Kaiyote) has begun a tireless and nobel social media call to action, after his project The Sweet Enoughs had their streaming profiles hijacked by what appears to be AI-generated music. Turns out, it's becoming a really common issue; the low barriers for entry of digital distributors and lack of verification processes, combined with the speed and scale of AI content, making it harder for artists to protect their creative identities and autonomy across streaming. Rosetta decides to investigate, chatting with Paul, Dave Gibson from Elemeno P about a similar experience last year, Recorded Music NZ CEO Jo Oliver, and AI Music researcher Dr Fabio Morreale.
DUSTY and GHOS from MOKOMOKAI are up in the studio for a kōrero with Nick and Rosetta about the new record PONO!, the release of their debut self-titled record on vinyl, and their forthcoming tour! They're playing Double Whammy on July 19, tickets and more info from Madcap.
Today on Audio Culture we pay tribute to wāhine toa Lorraine Barry, who sadly passed over the weekend. Manager to Dave Dobbyn, Tom Scott and countless other artists, and an absolute force in the Aotearoa music scene - Gareth Shute came up to the studio to chat with Nick and Rosetta about Lorraine's impact. The trio chat about Lorraine's Northern Irish roots and involvement with global icons The Spice Girls, what brought her to Aotearoa, and her commitment to mentoring emerging industry professionals through organisations such as MMF. Lorraine features in AudioCulture's article Five Wāhine Toa of The Industry.
Matthew is joined in the studio by folk musicians Australian Ned Collette and American Thalia Zedek (on the phone) to chat about their upcoming show at the Auckland Unitarian Church this Wednesday. Whakarongo mai nei!
