The debate around  trial of armed police patrols has raged on since it was announce three weeks ago. The patrols will be rolled out in Manukau, Waikato, and Canterbury and involve heavily armed, specially trained, units roaming the streets in vehicles. Lachlan spoke with senior lecturer at AUT, John Buttle, about the patrols.

The Ministry of Justice released a report this morning about barriers to the progression of sexual violence cases through the criminal justice system. Among other things, the report found only 31% of  sexual violence crimes reported to the Police resulted in a perpetrator being charged. 11% resulted in a conviction and just 6% in a prison sentence. Wire producer Bronwyn Wilde spoke to Jan Logie, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for the Minister of Justice (Sexual and Domestic Violence Issues) about the issues raised by the findings. Logie began by talking about the attrition of cases progressing through the system.
