NZ First: April 22, 2020

Lillian spoke to Fletcher this morning about contact tracing, an injection of cash into the regions and the announcement from the SFO that their decision regarding NZ First’s political donations will be out before the election. She started by asking how he felt about moving to level 3 next week.

Fletcher stated the government would have had the necessary capacity for contact tracing as of the 23rd April - the originally stated day to come out of Level 4 before the government announced an extentions. I wrote to the Ministry of Health asking whether this was indeed the case and this was their response:

"The Ministry is confident that New Zealand can provide high quality contact tracing. The Public Health Units (PHUs) and National Close Contact Service (NCCS) have a baseline capacity in place as well as additional capacity they can call on to deal with the contact tracing needs that might be ahead of us.  This includes managing under a range of scenarios that could occur within the different alert levels and controls and includes a current ability to scale up to 10,000 calls a day. From our most recent information from public health units and the National Close Contact Service, for the period 13-17 April, 80% of close contacts were traced within 48 hours of the case being notified to the units."

The Islamic Women's Council's public Submission for the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Christchurch Terror Attacks: July 8, 2020

The Islamic Women’s Council has been a solid and consistent voice not only in the aftermath of the terror attacks last year, but for years before - attempting to draw attention to the threats the Muslim community faced. Their voice was heard immediately after the attacks pointing to the amount of times they had tried to communicate information about these threats to officials but to no avail. The Royal Commission of Inquiry into the attack is almost finished, and the Council submitted their 127-page submission yesterday. They have also released this publicly which doesn’t normally happen. The submission includes details around meetings between Muslim groups and govt agencies, where no minutes were taken, and recommendations were ignored, it also addresses an online threat made against a Hamilton mouse on March 15th, the same day the terror attacks happened, that was never followed up by police. Lillian spoke to co-founder Anjum Rahman to find out more.

Slice of Life: The World Famous Dunedin Study w/ Sean Hogan and MOTAT: July 10, 2020

The Dunedin Study is a longitudinal study that began in Dunedin in the 1970s. The study involves over 1000 study members who have been regularly assessed since their birth. The most recent data was collected at phase (age) 45. Currently Auckland's Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) is holding an exhibit on the study called A Slice of Life: The World Famous Dunedin Study. The exhibit celebrates the study findings and the work of all of the particpants. Jemima Huston speaks with the study's Cohort and Assessment Manager Sean Hogan about the global impact of the study. She also talks to MOTAT's Exhibitions Manager Rebecca Britt about Slice of Life and what visitors can expect from the exhibition.

Producer Felix Walton speaks to Dr Stephen Child from Southern Cross about their national health and wellbeing survey.

Shane Heremaia, the Chief Executive of the Tuwharetoa Māori Trust Board tells Bronwyn about the iwi reaction to being the first use of a Section 33 transfer under the RMA, allowing the board to take over the Waikato Regional Council's water quality monitoring in Lake Taupō.

Lastly there is time for a small report about the Government’s allocations of the Three Waters Fund for councils, where Jessica Hopkins spoke to Alex Walker, the mayor of the Central Hawke’s bay District Council.

This week on the Tuesday Wire, Jemima speaks to University of Waikato politics lecturer Justin Phillips about some of the issues surrounding the upcoming Presidential Election in the United States. They discuss the risk of violence following the announcement of the results, the impact of social media echo chambers, and the possibility of a swing to the left. 

Jemima talks to past MP and leader of the United Future Party, Peter Dunne, about how the National Party might rebrand following its defeat this election and whether anti-Labour politics will ever work again for National. 

Jade looks into how Covid-19 has impacted the creative industry and the mental health of creatives. She speaks to full-time musician Amelia Thurlow about her pandemic experience and the event “Let’s Talk About It”, which encourages young performers to speak about mental health. 

Jade also chats to Kat Vlasova, a recent NYU graduate and creative technology freelancer, about her experience as a creative worker during the Covid-19 era in the United States.

On the Tuesday Wire today Jemima Huston speaks to Frances Arns, the Executive Director of Rainbow Youth, about the government’s new mental health funding for Rainbow young people. They also touch on the Green Party’s petition to ban conversion therapy in Aotearoa. 

Noah Ferguson-Dudding talks to Raise the Bar founder Chloe Ann-King about the importance of employers and the government taking responsibility for workers during the third lockdown.

Jemima looks into the call for constitutional transformation and the work of Matike Mai Aotearoa, the Independent Working Group on Constitutional Transformation. She interviews Professor Margaret Mutu (Ngāti Kahu, Te Rarawa, Ngāti Whātua) about what constitutional transformation is and how it can be achieved in Aotearoa. 

Noah wraps up the show with an interview with the Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation, Shaun Robinson, about the importance of increasing funding to mental health, and the potential long-term impacts of the pandemic.

Do Politics Have a Place in the Classroom?: April 27, 2021

In Australia last week, the New South Wales government condemned a Sydney primary school whose students made Black Lives Matter and anti police violence posters for their classrooms. NSW government officials have said that any teachers found politicising their classrooms will face disciplinary action and a full review will be made into the incident.

The NSW Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning says that "politics has no place in the classroom". 95bFM News and Editorial Director Jemima Huston questioned this sentiment and set out to explore where Aotearoa stands on the inclusion of political discourse in education. 

Jemima begins by explaining what happened in New South Wales last week. She speaks to Jason Wong, the President of the Lindfield Learning Village Parents & Citizens Association, who describes the 'political' task set for the students and the following backlash by the NSW government and the media. 

Jemima then goes on to ask New Zealand education experts whether politics has a place in New Zealand classrooms. She speaks to Victoria University of Wellington Senior Lecturer in Education Bronwyn Wood, NZEI Te Riu Roa President Liam Rutherford and the New Zealand Principals Federation. They discuss the inherently political nature of the classroom, dealing with teachers' biases, and the relevance of the NSW story stemming from a reflection exercise on recent indigenous histories.

Reviving Ta Rē Moriori w/ Hokotehi Moriori Heritage Trust: August 26, 2021

Ta Rē Morori is the language of the Moriori people who, according to oral history, travelled to Aotearoa New Zealand hundreds of years ago from Eastern Polynesia and settled in Rēkohu - the Chatham Islands. The last fluent speakers of ta rē Moriori passed away in the very early 1900s but a lot of work has been done to preserve the language. 

Last week, the Ministry of Education published five e-books written entirely in ta rē Moriori on their website. News and Editorial Director Jemima Huston heard about this project and wanted to speak to someone about how it came about.

Jemima interviews Susan Thorpe, who is the Cultural Projects Manager at the Hokotehi Moriori Heritage Trust about how the e-books were created. The interview becomes a broader conversation about the efforts that have been made in the past and the present to revive ta rē Moriori, as well as the battle to have the history of Moriori recognised and better understood by people in Aotearoa and across the world.

Today on the Tuesday Wire, we are presenting a Best of Level 4 Lockdown show! 

It has been five weeks to the day that the 95bFM News Team started producing news and current affairs content from home. So today, News and Editorial Director Jemima Huston thought she would highlight some of the best Level 4 lockdown pieces created by each person that contributes to our daily current affairs show.

On the show Jemima plays snippets of interviews played on the Wire over the last five weeks. We’ll go over and update our pieces on Conversion Therapy Practices Bill submissions, a book called "Protest! Shaping Aotearoa", how to entice native birds into your garden, the Green Party's thoughts on David Seymour tweeting the Māori vaccination code, the impact of lockdown on climate change, the Canadian election, the latest Afghanistan crisis and the flooding event in West Auckland.

The Wire with Christina: March 8, 2022

On the Tuesday Wire, Christina spoke to AUT Professor Marcus Jones for Dear Science. Today, they discussed Russia’s exclusion from the global scientific community, new variants of Covid-19, and when the pandemic might finally be over.

She also spoke to Professor Robert MacCulloch from the Univeristy of Auckland about Christopher Luxon’s State of the Nation speech at the weekend, and the economic breakdown of the National party’s proposed tax cuts.

Trishil spoke to Dr Alys Clarke from the Auckland Bioengineering Institute about her research into a virtual placenta. The application of the placenta will allow for clinical trials to occur during pregnancy.

Trishil also spoke to Professor Jennifer Kruger into her research into the femfit technology. The tech is designed to assist women with urinary incontience with exercising their pelvic floor muscles.

And finally, Christina spoke to Dr Gwyn Easterbrook-Smith from Massey University the representation of sex workers in the media, and the stigma attached to the sex industry nearly twenty years after sex work was decriminalised in Aotearoa.
