Presenting a new body of work, Wrinkled Speech is Layla Rudneva-Mackay’s first solo exhibition at Melanie Roger Gallery. 

In exploring themes of motherhood, healing, the subconscious, and womanhood, Rudneva-Mackay, through seemingly abstract paintings, plays with figurative elements and luminescence. 

Sofia spoke to Layla about the show, its themes, and her practice.

Public Clay is an exhibition by Fiona Jack currently on at Melanie Roger Gallery. 

Fiona Jack is a conceptual artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau where she is the Head of School at Te Waka Tūhura Elam School of Fine Art at Waipapa Taumata Rau the University of Auckland. 

As Jack’s first solo exhibition with Melanie Roger Gallery, the exhibition presents a new series of ‘earth posters’ made in collaboration with Naarm/Melbourne-based poet, Sholto Buck, as well as a new collaborative work with Tāmaki Makaurau-based artist, Elizabeth Pointon.

Sofia spoke to Fiona about this exhibition, her practice, and these collaborative projects.

Beth had a kōrero with Aotearoa photographer Murray Savidan about his new book STOP: Look Both Ways (Ugly Hill Press). The book showcases some of the best of Murray’s photographs from the 1960s to now. STOP: Look Both Ways is out now at independent bookstores near you.

Sofia had a kōrero with writer, director, and producer of documentary The Haka Party Incident, Katie Wolfe, about the largely forgotten piece of history of the Haka Party Incident and her filmmaking process. 

The Haka Party Incident is now showing in cinemas across Aotearoa. If you want to hear more from Katie Wolfe about the film, there is also a Q&A on the 6th February (Waitangi Day) at Matakana Cinemas.

Dance choreographr Xin Ji joins Beth in the studio to discuss Body Show which is a physical dance theatre piece as well as his debut solo show. The Body Show is on at Q Theatre from the 18th-22nd February as part of Auckland Pride Festival. Tickets from Q Theatre’s website.

Ruin on the Cascade is Ayesha Green’s (Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga, Kāi Tahu, Pākehā) first solo exhibition with Season Aotearoa. 

The title refers to a faux ruin in Stowe Gardens, a Georgian landscape garden in Buckinghamshire established in the early 18th century by British army officer and Whig politician Richard Temple, the 1st Viscount Cobham. Using the Stowe Gardens as a framework, Green explores a range of subjects, including class, land use, knowledge systems, ethics, national identity, and British imperialism through her painting and sculptural practice.
