Is reality show ruining society? Or is it just entertainment. It’s showing no signs of slowing down, with the popularity of shows like the Bachelor and Love Island seemingly on the rise. Kelly Enright had a talk with AUT academic Professor Thomas Owen about the potential downsides to the genre. And to present a balanced argument we invited Jane Yee, the host of The Real Pod, a podcast about reality TV produced by the Spinoff, to chat with Stewart Sowman-Lund about why it’s such good entertainment.

One third of New Zealanders, including 43% of children, live in rental homes. 

This trend is at odds with the Kiwi dream (and expected reality) of owning a white-picket-fence villa by the time you reach 30.

As society shifts, regulations stay the same. Which is why the government wishes to review the current legislation, and make it more accurate. 

Proposals have been made, areas are being looked into, and consultation is on its way, until October 21st.

I/W w/ Neal Curtis on the Royal debate: November 7, 2018

We are sure you would have seen, to some extent, the media coverage of the Royals visit over the last couple of weeks. You wouldn’t have heard it here on b but we’ve decided this week to revisit for a particular reason. Why exactly do people get royally excited over the royals?? Why does the media take the opportunity to put out multiple stories every day on the royals? Why do we still care? Why was there no formal acknowledgment of day in which the Declaration of Independence was signed here in 1835? Why did they not go up to Waitangi for a visit?

 

We’re also looking at anti-govt movements this week for Worry Week, and while that term itself is a little limiting Lillian's instructed the Wire team to think broadly about this, as usual. So in this case Lillian wanted to see whether there was also a threat to democracy at hand when everyone is so distracted by the royals. What does that mean for society engaging with its government? And how detrimental could that be...

Neal Curtis is the head of Media and Communication here at the University of Auckland. He is also an immigrant from Britain who has now been here for 7 years. Lillian wanted to see his thoughts on the media attention the royals received, but started by asking what his relationship to the monarchy was as a British New Zealander.

Wire Worry Week: Sexual Harassment I/V w/ Māmari Stephens: September 19, 2018

For worry week, we are discussing sexual harassment.

When I was looking more into this topic, I came across an article by Vox, which discussed a allegation made by a woman against President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh.

Vox discussed how the the New York Times, who were the first to break the story, labelled this as sexual misconduct, and not sexual assault.This got me thinking, of how our media and our society discuss these issues and use the terms interchangeably and what the consequences of doing this could be.

To find out more about this, Darashpreet Johal spoke to Māmari Stephens, senior lecturer at the school of law at Victoria University.

As a content warning, this discussion involves Mamari and I talking about what the terms, sexual harassment, sexual assault and sexual misconduct mean and discussing a sexual abuse case that involves a child.

The Our March pride event happened over the weekend, along with other events throughout Tāmaki Makaurau over the week. Much commentary from mainstream media was questioning the event in the wake of a number of corporate sponsors pulling out following the Auckland Pride Boards decision to ban police uniforms. Phylesha Brown-Acton is a board member to the Auckland Pride Festival Inc. Society Organisation. Lillian Hanly spoke with Phylesha to find out more about Our March, the history of the pride events and what Pride could look like in the future.

Dr. Cornel West on free speech, utopian futures and music: August 15, 2018

This interview is a highly anticipated one. Lillian Hanly got to speak with Dr Cornel West and asked him to introduce himself with a one liner - he called himself a black intellectual freedom fighter. This encompasses his many roles as an American philosopher, political activist, author, social critic and commentator. He has been a professor at Harvard, Princeton and Yale Universities. He calls himself a jazz man in the world of ideas, and often speaks through his love of jazz and blues music. He’s even made a number of spoken word and hip hop albums. Other important things you might want to know about him is that he was in both the Matrix sequels. His work focuses on race, gender and class in American society. He is here in Auckland this week for an event called Polarised, a discussion between himself and Douglas Murray, a well known conservative and critic of Islam whose book The Strange Death of Europe gives firsthand accounts and criticisms of mass Islamic immigration and problems of multiculturalism in the EU. Lillian started by asking Dr. West about this event.
