________
Awning:
Awning is a indie quartet led by Christian Dimick.
Sometimes the music is loud and sometimes it is quiet.
Big Sur:
Big Sur are an Auckland-based group known for performances that contrast ‘folk’ instrumentation, cinematic soundscapes, and intricate storytelling with the band member's predilection for gritty distortion and elegiac lyricism. At the core of Big Sur are a dynamic four-piece ensemble that often perform with a cast of additional musicians bringing an eclectic mix of instruments including harp, violin, double bass, saxophone, and banjo. This fluid lineup allows the band to explore a range of textures and moods, creating a live experience that’s both unpredictable & captivating.
In 2024, Big Sur released their second single, "Lands," which quickly captured the attention of student radio and RNZ's Charlotte Ryan (with a Music 101 performance to follow) and received praise from Chris Cudby of Under the Radar, who described it as a “Morricone-esque drama” – a nod to the band’s cinematic flair.
At the heart of the band's sound is the evocative lyricism of their lead singer, whose writing explores a personal connection to Celtic mythology & political resistance. Bringing together a rich layer of storytelling to the band's already immersive instrumental backdrop, evokes a feeling of rebellion, identified by listeners who describe the band's set as one full of "rollicking vistas".
