The Swap Meet

Tonight it's all about the breaks - we have special guest P-Money coming thru to tell us about his new website opendrumsonly.com - the place to go to find a catalogue of all the world's breakbeats in one place. We are treated to P's first vinyl set in around twenty years, mashing it up good and proper. He will be lugging a couple of boxes of records to The Other Crate record fair 20th September 2025 - along with some serious heavyweight collectors and DJs. Pop thru!

On this week’s Swap Meet, Jubt was joined in the booth by the two Chrises: DJ Kurisu shared a handful of funk favourites, while Chris Leskovsek took us on a trip through South American cumbias, with stops at Los Mirlos, Ranil, and Juanaeco y su Combo among others.

Alongside those sets, we heard new material from artists like Dawuna, Yaya Bey, and Silas Short, plus Pino Palladino & Blake Mills, and Berlioz. Classic moments came courtesy of Cymande, Tim Maia, and Jorge Ben.

We also marked the birthday of Chuck Brown, the Godfather of Go-Go, with his track “Bustin’ Loose.”

Campbell digs Japan, and he's just back from a ten day jaunt of well curated record stores, incredible food and many greetings of "Arigato gozaimasu!" 

His set this month is full of raw, soulful heaters and cosmic jazz-funk that makes you screw your face up like you accidentally ate the ball of wasabi along with your sashimi. All time Swap Meet fave Garfield Fleming’s 'Don’t Send Me Away' still hits like heartbreak on vinyl, that pleading vocal over lush orchestration is pure modern soul gold. And then there’s Mystic Harmony’s Lovers Rock take on The Jones Girls' 'Nights Over Egypt' deep, spiritual, and epic. Add Freedom Suite 'Come Closer' to that category: a rare groove Trini disco dub with the kind of bassline that makes you look around the room for someone else who heard that. The funkier edges really pop off with Wild Fire 'The Dealer' another Trinidadian gem that’s psych-funk with fuzz guitar and heavy attitude. 

What keeps it interesting is how it moves. From the glistening disco of Chantal Curtis ‘Get Another Love’ to Booker Newberry III’s ‘Love Town’, there’s that roller-skate-ready shimmer. Then out of nowhere you’re in Brazil with Alma Brasileira ‘Peixeiro’ a choro inflect samba and Dom Salvador’s ‘Barumba’, all syncopated rhythms and raw, earthy joy. On the modern side, Cool Affair  ‘Motoric Patterns (Kaidi Tatham Mix)’ slides in with some proper bruk energy: Kaidi doing what he does best. Campbell can't keep away from Jazz - he's got you covered there too - also gotta keep pumping current faves The Circling Sun too.
