Cabbage, mull, buds, dak, smoke, skunk, hash, chronic, grass, pot, cannabis. It’s the fourth most used recreational drug in New Zealand, coming in behind caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco. Back in 2020, alongside the general election, voters were asked in a non-binding referendum whether they supported a proposed cannabis legalisation and control bill. The result was a vote opposing the legalisation of cannabis by a thin margin.

Currently, medicinal cannabis is available via prescription, but cannabis otherwise remains illegal to use, distribute, or produce.

For this week’s Get Action, producer Theo spoke to Patrick and Colden from the Reeferendum 2026 campaign, on their petition to legalise cannabis and reform drug laws and policing in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Back in 2020, two new guidelines were introduced to support schools in teaching Relationships and Sexuality Education. The guidelines were introduced by the then Associate Education Minister and New Zealand First MP, Tracey Martin, after reports from the Education Review Office showed inconsistencies in how schools taught this subject - alongside significant gaps. The new guidelines brought greater emphasis to sexuality and gender diversity, Māori and Pacific views of sexuality, the use of digital technologies, and information about relationships and sexuality education for disabled learners.

However, the current government scrapped these guidelines as part of a coalition agreement with New Zealand First, who campaigned on removing the guidelines, which they called ‘woke gender ideology.’

The new proposed guidelines for relationships and sex education are significantly different to those introduced back in 2020.

For this week’s Get Action, Producer Theo spoke to Leonie Morris from Te Wāhi Wāhine o Tāmaki Makaurau - the Auckland Women’s centre - on their petition to bring back Te Tiriti-based, inclusive relationships and Sexuality education in schools.

The government is pausing the new prescriptions of Puberty Blockers to gender diverse and transgender young people from the 19th of December onwards, following a similar move by the UK after the results of the NHS’s Cass Review.

Wire Producer Flo spoke to activist Lauren Craig about the effects of the legislation, her petition “Reverse the decision to deny transgender and takatāpui young people access to puberty blockers” against the changes and the wider political motivation for the policy.

Disabilities come in myriad forms, but it is often how institutions and society engage with them that shapes the limitations they pose.

For this week's Get Action, I spoke to JT from Touch Compass on their petition ‘Say YES to “Access” #YesToAccessNZ | Words Shape World’, aiming to encourage a rethink of the way we conceptualise disability as a society by changing how we talk about it.

This week we've seen the most promising developments yet towards de-escalation in Palestine, with international dialogue leading to a cease-fire, exchanges of hostages, and plans to establish a new governing body in the Gaza Strip.

Yet the long term trauma created by conflict often perpetuates instability creating a cycle of violence and escalation. With no plan materialising for ending Israeli occupation of the West Bank nor for pursuing justice for the crimes committed in this conflict, huge questions hang over the future of Palestine and Israel.

For this week’s Get Action!, Wednesday Wire Producer Manny spoke with Rick Williment, Chair of the Public Issues Committee of Psychotherapists Aotearoa New Zealand about his open letter for Mental Health Professionals calling on government action for Palestine.

Over the weekend, the largest pro-Palestinian protest in Aotearoa’s history was held in Tāmaki Makaurau, drawing a crowd of well over 25,000 people.

One of the mains calls of protestors and the organisers was for the government to place sanctions on Israel for actions they’ve committed during their war on Gaza, which the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory has officially referred to as genocidal and have led to the deaths of almost 65,000 Palestinians since October 2023.

For this week’s Get Action! Wednesday Wire Host Oto spoke with Nadine Mortaja, one of the organisers behind Saturday’s March for Humanity, about a petition of hers calling for the New Zealand Government to place sanctions on Israel.

Towards the end of August, secondary school outdoor education teachers were told that the course would be removed from the Education Ministry's general subject list as part of the government’s proposed replacement of the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA).

As a result of being excluded from the list of general subjects, outdoor education, which provides direct training and pathways for students looking to enter conservation, environmental science and outdoor tourism careers, would be included in the list of vocational subjects, meaning that the course curriculum would be designed by the Industry Skills Boards instead of the Ministry of Education, stripping schools of the flexibility in designing the curriculum and removing pathways to higher education for students.

For this week’s Get Action! Wednesday Wire host Oto spoke with Fiona McDonald from Education Outdoors New Zealand to discuss a petition of hers calling on the ministry of education to keep outdoor education in the list of secondary school general subjects.

The Israeli founded and based company SodaStream is the most popular sparkling water maker in New Zealand, supplying sparkling water machines to over 400,000 households in Aotearoa, with around 30% of families using one to make beverages at home.

The company has also had involvement in the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, previously having a factory in the Ma'ale Adumim settlement in the internationally recognised Palestinian west bank.

For this week’s Get Action! Oto spoke with Brandon Johnstone, a BDS coordinator at Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa about a petition calling on retailers and stockists to swap out SodaStream for more ethical alternatives.

With Israel’s war on Gaza now reaching its 655th day, bringing the number of casualties in the strip to almost 60,000 Palestinians, city councils, both in Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world, have been adopting resolutions officially calling for a ceasefire and divesting from Israeli companies and other enterprises involved in weapons manufacturing.

For this week’s Get Action! Oto spoke to Katrina Mitchell-Kouttab, a member of the Manawatu-based human rights group Thyme for Action, about a petition of hers calling on the Palmerston North City Council to adopt a ceasefire motion and ethical investment policy.

Wed 9 Jul 2025

The Southerner was a passenger express train in the South Island running between Christchurch and Invercargill from 1970 to 2002.

The train was eventually closed due a decline in passenger numbers and subsidies, although it was briefly revived in May this year for four days as part of a tourist experience.

Recently, a group of campaigners from Save our Trains launched a petition calling on the government to restore the Southerner train route as a more accessible form of travel for South Islanders.

Wednesday Wire Host Oto spoke with Dave Macpherson from Save Our Train - Southern, to discuss his petition and why the Southerner should be restored.
