For a number of years, Aotearoa has been dealing with a shortage of psychologists and similar professionals to deal with the growing mental health needs of the wider population, with estimates suggesting that an additional 1,000 more psychologists are needed to fill gaps in the profession.

In response to the country’s growing mental health needs, Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey announced a new Associate Psychologist role, consisting of recent post-graduates, to work alongside fully trained Psychologists.

However, a number of Psychologists and experts have criticised the introduction of this new role, saying that these associate Psychologists may be expected to take on the responsibilities of clinical Psychologists despite being underqualified.

For this week’s Get Action! Oto spoke to Dr Kumari Valentine, a clinical psychologist based in Dunedin, who’s launched a petition calling on the government to roll back the introduction of the new Associate psychology role and look to other methods of filling gaps in the Psychology profession.

A petition was launched by Te Taiao o Kawhia Moana, a group dedicated to the protection and conservation of the Kāwhia harbour, calling on the Ōtorohanga District Council to remove vehicle access from vulnerable areas of the inner harbour and to Support the development of new alternative access infrastructure.

The group says that local taonga species and ecosystems are being put at risk by current vehicle access and that The proposed Ocean Beach access way would provide a sustainable alternative that balances community access needs with environmental protection.

For this week’s Gert Action! Oto spoke to John Forbes, founding Chair of Te Taiao o Kāwhia Moana, to discuss the petition and the importance of protecting the harbour.

One of the main promises that National and the coalition ran on in the lead up to the most recent general elections was that of tax relief, by lifting the personal income tax thresholds for low- and middle-income earners and families, and most notably, landlords and large businesses.

Funding these tax cuts have been widespread austerity measures, with almost  10,000 public sector roles having been cut as of December 2024.

In response to the government’s tax policies Tax Justice Aotearoa have launched a petition calling for capital gains taxes to be introduced and other tax reforms to achieve better social outcomes in Aotearoa.

Oto spoke to Glenn Barclay, Chairperson of Tax Justice Aotearoa and the better taxes coalition, about the petition and the issues with the tax system in Aotearoa.

Earlier this month, the government announced a turnaround plan for Kainga Ora - Aotearoa’s state and emergency housing agency.

Housing minister Chris Bishop said that the plan would refocus the agency on its core mission of building and managing social housing in a financially sustainable way, however the plan involves the sale of 900 state homes annually, resulting in a net increase of only 400 homes annually to house the waitlist of about 20,000 New Zealanders waiting for social housing.

For this week’s Get Action! Oto spoke to Vanessa Cole from Public Housing Futures to discuss a campaign calling on the government to build and purchase enough public housing to house people on the “True Waitlist” for public housing, which includes houseless people and those relying on accommodation supplements for rent who don’t qualify for public housing.

The McCallum Brothers is an Auckland-based Sand mining company who have created a proposal to mine eight million cubic metres of sand from the seabed of the Bream Bay in the North Island over the next 35 years.

While initially considered a low priority project, the proposal has recently been fast-tracked under new legislation, prompting opposition from local Iwi and Hapu, as well as concerned residents across the bream bay, for the projectsproject's potential impacts on local marine life and the region’s fishing industries.

For this week’s Get Action! Oto spoke to Brenda Leeuwenberg - a resident of Ruakaka, who started a petition on behalf of the communities along the Bream Bay, calling on the regional government to oppose the project and revoke its fast-track consents.

Trans Tasman Resource Limited is an Australian Mining company who have been looking to acquire consents for a seabed mining project in the Taranaki bight for more than a decade.

The Taranaki bight is home to a biodiverse ecosystem and a crucial spot for local fishers, and so fierce opposition from locals has been able to thwart attempts by Trans Transsman Resource to gain consents for the project.

However, with the introduction of fast-track legislation, there are concerns that the company may be able to bypass local opposition and environmental experts to gain consents and begin deep sea mining in the Taranaki Bight.

For this week’s Get Action! Oto spoke to Charlotte Melser, a district councillor in Whanganui, about her petition to the local government to continue blocking attempts by Trans Tasman Resources to gain consents to mine in the Taranaki bight.

Functional Neurological Disorder is a fast growing condition in Aotearoa that impacts almost 2000 adults a year.

Symptoms range from fainting, to seizures,  paralysis, pain and immobility.

However, awareness of the condition, and subsequent treatment, is scarce in Aotearoa, and many of those dealing with it report being misdiagnosed with conditions like epilepsy and facing stigma while receiving treatment.

For this week’s Get Action! Oto spoke to Keremia Tairua, Cofounder of FND aware New Zealand, about a petition she started aiming to raise awareness towards the condition amongst health practitioners.

Over the last two years, there have been a multitude of mechanical failures regarding the inter-islander ferries between the North and the South Island, which has brought great attention to the government. KiwiRail has requested a one-point-seven billion dollar funding request for a project to see the ferries repaired and ensure capacity for train transport as well.

Unfortunately, the government has declined the funding request, which could seriously impact the travel potential of goods and services, not to mention general transport, between the North and South island.

For this week’s Get Action! Sasha spoke to Dave Macpherson from The Future is Rail about a petition he started to ensure replacement Cook Strait ferries can carry trains.

On the 29th of August, TVNZ aired a news story covering the recent Israeli raids into the West Bank in Occupied Palestine, which they described as the “largest counter-terrorism strike” in the West Bank in 10 years.

The raid, which persisted for a week, killed at least 30 Palestinians, two of whom were confirmed to be children.

Many of those who witnessed the coverage said that this new story, like others by TVNZ, used biassed media framing to depict the Israeli Defence Forces favourably while ignoring Palestinian civilian casualties and the context of the occupation.

For this week’s Get Action! Wednesday Wire host Oto spoke to Kareana Kee who launched a petition calling for TVNZ to review their coverage of Israel’s war in Gaza.

Algerian Boxer Imane Khelif was the subject of a widespread disinformation campaign during this year’s olympics, with commentators and netizens from right-wing spaces alleging that Khelif had been assigned male at birth and should not have qualified to compete in the women’s Olympic boxing tournament.

No medical evidence has been given to suggest that Khelif had XY chromosomes or elevated levels of testosterone and the International Olympic Committee issued a statement saying that Khelif fulfilled all the requirements needed to compete in women’s boxing.

However, this did not stop our own Deputy Prime Minister, Winston Peters, from contributing to the disinformation campaign against Khelif, making a statement on X, formerly twitter, saying that Khelif had “failed a gender test”, which is why NZ first fought for gender rules in sports to be in their coalition agreement.

In response, concerned citizens and takatāpui, Louisa Wall and Samantha Green, launched a petition on our action station calling for Peters to be held accountable for his comments and for legislative framework to be established for officials who peddle disinformation.

For this week’s Get Action! Oto spoke to Louisa and Samantha about the petition and their calls to the government.
