In Hour 1 this week it's Hugo Massien who's had a number of high profile releases already behind him for labels including the legendary XL Recordings and Dusky’s 17 Steps imprint. His recent EP 'Advanced Aerial Threat' came out on Tectonic Recordings last month, carving a sound for himself that sees him bring together elements from house, techno, dubstep and hardcore. He had this to say about his mix:
"I’ve put together a mix of my own unreleased tracks, traveling my production's various paths of the past few years… Some (listed) are forthcoming tracks, and others are still in their earlier stages. The forthcoming releases included are a third offering on Ebeamz along with a selection of my unreleased tracks from the London underground house scene 2014-16 that will be dropping on Keysound later in the year."

In Hour 2 it's Ethiopian Records aka Endeguena Mulu with his second mix from his 'Listening to your Heart' series entitled 'Listening to your Heart - With only love and dreams in your pocket'. The mix is filled with unreleased unheard tracks from Ethiopian Records and a couple of tracks from his recent EP release on Warp Records offshoot Arcola entitled 'Ye Feqer Edaye (Burden of Love)'. He told us:
"It is dedicated to the billions of souls out there that have not been given the chance to express themselves freely on this “global" platform, that misrepresents them and pretends to speak on their behalf. A global platform that has the potential to be a lot more than the monopolized, one sided, self aggrandizing, repetitive, fast spreading echo chamber that it is today."

Solid Steel (22nd June) In Hour 1 it's Hot Chip Megamix which is currently hitting festivals all over Europe this summer. Having previously featured Joe Goddard on Solid Steel before, it's the turn of fellow band member Felix Martin to open up the record bag. Head over to https://www.hotchipmegamix.com/ for the upcoming dates and they had this to say: “This is the first in a series of mixes under the Hot Chip Megamix name. This instalment was put together by Felix. Megamix is a way for us to play music we love and to integrate it live on stage with electronic elements like 808 drums and a TB303.This mix includes a selection of tunes that are relevant to the Megamix concept - fun ways of remixing and messing around with our own music, along with some of our favourite cuts by other artists. It includes tracks from Joe & Alexis under their own solo monikers,  Hot Chip music as reimagined by Erol Alkan and Carl Craig, and a very well know Alexis acapella put into a new context alongside music by Matthew Herbert & Trevino.

In Hour 2 it's François X, a key protagonist within Paris’ underground scene for nearly a decade, François X has firmly cemented himself as one of France’s finest exports within the realms of House and Techno. Since making his production debut in 2009, the Parisian has gone on to establish his inimitable blend of genre bridging Techno, most notably via Dj Deep’s renowned Deeply Rooted imprint as well as his own label DEMENT3D. With his versatility fuelled by a rich knowledge and understanding of his musical heritage, his rapid rise has seen the DJ establish himself as a key resident at Concrete Paris, not to mention regular appearances at the likes of Berghain (Berlin), fabric (London) and Robert Johnson (Frankfurt). His debut album 'Irregular Passion' came out at the end of last year and he told us: "The idea behind the mix wasn't very clear at the beginning. Experimental? Danceable? Trippy?… So I decided to let loose and selects tracks I was enjoying at that moment to create a patchwork of vibes. I'm known for playing straight 4/4 techno but around a year or so ago I began to reinvent myself slightly by playing tracks I wouldn't usually include in my in sets. Taking more risks. Surprising both my audience and, first and foremost, myself. Music is the answer!" - François X

In Hour 1 we are pleased to welcome Superorganism with a concept mix based around music with themes from sea to space. Starting with 'Jungle Waters' by Sam Gallantry, 'Sea calls me home' by Julia Holter and 'Swim Good' by Frank Ocean, the mix goes on to feature 'Stratus' by Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, 'Deep Blue Day' by Brian Eno and 'Starman' by David Bowie. Their self-titled debut album came out in March on Domino and you can catch the multinational eight-piece group at festivals throughout Europe this summer, before heading to North America and back for a full European tour in Autumn. They had this to say about their mix;
"Follow the whale through a journey through song from the depths of the Ocean up into outer space towards the Sun."

In Hour 2 we hand over to Krystal Klear following the release of his latest EP 'The Division', which includes the huge 'Neutron Dance' and is out on Running Back, the label run by Gerd Janson. Having previously released on UTTU, Hot Haus, Eglo, Madtech and All City, the Irish producer also runs his own label Cold Tonic. He will be playing all night in his home town Dublin at District 8 on May 12th to celebrate the release of the EP and he told us;
"Dark disco balearic garage sleaze. A selection of tracks I would use to warm up a club to bring it into the heavier stages of the evening. Tipping the hat to Larry and Alfredo. Sun cream and plastic dreams. As Gerd would say 'guilty feet have got no rhythm”

In Hour 1 we welcome  Sassy J who has a colourful and charming sound informed by her simple and honest love of music and emotion. She runs her own Patchwork night, does the art for each party and has a passion for sewing one off pieces of clothing that marry many different textures and styles in compelling ways, much like when she mixes records. She has also done artwork for Eglo and did an excellent cassette for The Trilogy Tapes. Sassy J has been passionately doing her do for 20 years now. In that time she has kept a focus on forward thinking electronic and analog sounds, has been a consistently exciting DJ and has earned a reputation amongst esteemed artists and fans that appreciate her unhurried style. Driven by a feel for the occasion, a passion to present new sounds and desire to leave a mark on her audience, Sassy J has played everywhere from Eglo Dance and Dekmantel to OHM and De School. She had this to say about her mix;
"I love to create sonic journeys through sounds, vibes and words. Setting moods, visiting places in the imagination, expressing my feelings and thoughts. I like to let the music speak for itself on the 90 minute ride. "

In Hour 2 Belfast producer Jordan takes over who has a busy festival season coming up over coming weeks, sharing bills with everyone from Larry Heard & Saoirse to Space Dimension Controller & Kink. As well as that he continues to run his weekly party, The Night Institute alongside his friend and mentor, Timmy Stewart. He had this to say about his mix;
"Italo, electro & oddball house all represented in the hour plus a few samples nicked off Youtube. I've dipped my toe in to as many of my musical influences as possible within the hour, from old Warp Records and Beggars Banquet output right up to what are, in my eyes, some of the most exciting imprints of now - Deewee, Futureboogie and Life & Death."

In Hour 1 our guest is Chrome Sparks (aka Jeremy Malvin) following the recent release of his debut self titled album on Counter Records. The album is the product of an obsessive approach to production as much it is about a restless hunt for new ideas over several years spent between Malvin’s Navy Yard, Brooklyn studio and a secluded cabin in upstate New York. He spent a month there to escape the distractions of the city, and to distill his process during what became an intensive period of creativity. He is currently on tour with Machinedrum in North America, before heading over to Europe for 6 dates in May. He told us;
"An expedition. embarking from somewhere in the past, metamorphosing into faux-familiarity, while diving into ephemeral moments unknown, rustling from celebration to introspection.
enjoy."

In Hour 2 we welcome back Paul White who last appeared on Solid Steel in 2013 and is back celebrating the release of his latest album 'Rejuvenate', which is out today on R & S Records. As the title suggests, Rejuvenate marks a rebirth for the South London musician who has abandoned sampling altogether and he wrote, played and produced the album himself, which features Denai  Moore, Shungudzo and his sister Sarah Williams White. He is also known for producing tracks for Danny Brown (amongst others) and was responsible for 10 of the 15 tracks on 'Atrocity Exhibition'. He had this to say about his mix;
"I wanted this mix to really reflect what music is moving me at the moment. I mainly made this mix for myself. There's some new music I'm into, some old music I'm into, and some solo and produced music by myself. Its a window into who I am musically. I love all music so couldn't include everything in only an hour mix obviously, but its a look into how I hear music as all the same thing, the human experience."

Solid Steel (6th April) In Hour 1 celebrating the release of the new Dr Octagon album 'Moosebumps: An Exploration Into Modern Day Horripilation', we welcome back Dan The Automator, who first appeared on Solid Steel in 2000 and is one third of the trio behind Dr Octagon alongside Kool Keith and DJ QBert. The first Dr Octagon album dropped over 20 years ago to great acclaim and two tracks from that album 'Blue Flowers' and 'Earth People' feature in the mix. We also hear 'Black Hole Son' from the brand new album which is out today, plus a whole host of tracks produced by Dan The Automator and Prince doing his incredible cover of 'Creep' by Radiohead.
In Hour 2 we hand over to Adam Freeland who has been producing music for over two decades, which included running his Marine Parade label out of Brighton, a 10 year residency at Fabric and nomination for a Grammy. Now he is part of The Acid, which includes RY X from The Howling. He told us;
"This mix is really just an acknowledgement of my lifelong love of arpeggiators and excitement for this new wave of arpeggiated synth stuff combined with some deeper drones and desert psych influences. I’m living totally off grid way out in the Mohave desert near Joshua tree, where this mix was recorded. My studio is solar powered ( no other option out here), there’s an exhilarating feeling to know that the photons running through the circuit boards of my machines emanated from the surface the Sun just 8 mins and 20 seconds prior. Of late, I’ve been more focused on my band ‘The Acid’  and pursuing my lifelong dream of living off grid and figuring out how to build a house than DJing. Incase you missed it we ( The Acid) put out a debut album called ‘Liminal’ and more recently we scored a documentary film  ‘the bomb’  a documentary about the story of nuclear weapons. We have been touring film festivals, performing the score in a 360 immersive environment live to the film. In December we performed it live at the Nobel peace prize ceremonies in Oslo which was in incredibly inspiring and moving experience for me.  You can check the score/soundtrack here  or Watch the film on Netflix here or come see us play live, next UK gig Camden Roundhouse Jan 2019(tbc)"

Our guest in Hour 1 is Answer Code Request ahead of the release of his new album 'Gens' which is out next week on Ostgut Ton. For the Berghain resident, this is his follow up to his celebrated debut LP 'Code' from 2014 and you can catch him playing tonight at index, Dublin, 17th Feb at Fabric London and the album release party at Berghain on 24th Feb. He told us: "With this mix I explore opposing musical poles that I gravitate towards as a DJ and producer – but even more so as a listener. Namely, abstract electronic pieces on the one hand and more obviously rhythm-based tracks on the other. I’ve included music classic and new, all of which however shares a certain state of mind, a feeling of distance, restlessness and isolation. The first 40 minutes wander through ambient and experimental music textures, eventually moving toward more club-friendly vistas, broken beats, dubstep, electro and techno, and including the occasional uplifting track. Having long had a soft spot for UK hardcore outgrowths and related club sounds, I also hoped to show with this selection what I see as a broader bass music continuum, one which includes producers outside of the UK. Finally, this mix was recorded at home after several sketches made on the road during my album live tour. It's been a pleasure to compile for a series as pioneering as this one."

In Hour 2 we welcome J.G.Biberkopf whose music spans club, theatre and digital radio contexts. His debut EP, titled 'Ecologies', launched the new Knives label created by Kuedo and Joe Shakespeare of Berlin’s Motto Books. From cyber ambience and slamming rhythmic constructions, to instant trails of web-filtered grime and beatless studies of net phenomenology, Biberkopf’s first release was intended as a field trip into the representations of nature that emerge from the social media scape. A follow-up recording, the full-length Ecologies II: Ecosystems Of Excess, was released in 2016 and his last release 'Fountain of Meaning' was out via Aisha Devi’s Danse Noire label, on the 8th December, which includes a collaboration with Devi herself on the track ‘The Illusion Of Solidarity’.

In Hour 1 we welcome Robert Hood, founding member of the legendary group Underground Resistance (with ‘Mad’ Mike Banks and Jeff Mills) following the release of his third and final installment in a trilogy of EP releases for Dekmantel Records, that initially began back in February 2016. 'Paradygm Shift Volume 3' embraces the trademark, minimal, funk techno sounds that defined his earlier career and is an extension on the concept as outlayed by Hood during the project’s conceptual stage: ‘‘The idea behind Paradygm Shift is similar to a shift in our focus. We can become so complacent; we are so comfortable with our surroundings, I think this is the time for electronic music to find a new mindset.’’ He’s currently finalising a new EP due for release in April on his own M-Plant label.

In Hour 2 we hand over to Canadian producer CFCF, also known as Mike Silver who has been producing for nearly a decade on labels like Paper Bag, 1080p, International Feel Recordings and Arts and Crafts for his last release alongside Jean-Michel Blais.  He had this to say about his mix;
'I tried to make a mix that reflected some of the ideas in my 12”, where raw emotional prog house intermingles with goofball filter house. I think I’m always searching for a nugget of truth inside discarded music, even prog house and goa and tech house. The few more current tracks sprinkled throughout serve to reorient the listener to present day, whose anxieties at first undercut the plastic euphoria, but are ultimately mixed and normalized back into the catalog of the past.'

This week it's an Alpha Pup Records takeover with an extended show lead by Ronald Bruner Jr., a Grammy award-winning jazz drummer, composer and producer who began his professional career at the age of 15, performing with the Theolonius Monk Institute, which opened doors to perform with many great artists such as Wayne Shorter, Dianne Reeves, Ron Carter, and others.  At the age of eighteen, Ronald Bruner Jr. began performing with jazz legend Kenny Garrett. Since then, Ronald’s career has excelled at a rapid rate, encompassing jazz to punk rock, which eventually put him in the company of the band Suicidal Tendencies. Stints with Prince and Stevie Wonder would also become beacons of light for his exploration in many music spheres. As a 2011 Grammy Award winner for best contemporary jazz album, he's since worked with iconic artists such as Stanley Clarke, Chaka Khan, Flying Lotus, Kenny Garrett, and Alan Holdsworth. The acclaim would continue into the 2010s, featuring on the highly praised Kendrick Lamar album To Pimp A Butterfly and one of its lead out singles. Ronald launched his debut album Triumph on World Galaxy / Alpha Pup Records in spring of 2017, featuring Mac Miller, Thundercat, George Duke, Taylor Graves, and Danielle Withers. Ronald has recently been touring the world with artists such as Chaka Khan and Kamasi Washington and is finishing up work on his sophomore album for World Galaxy / Alpha Pup Records. With a mix kicking off with a track from his album alongside his brother Thundercat and featuring just some of his influences, he told us;
"This is only the beginning of the depth of me!" - Ronald Bruner Jr.
In Hour 2 it's Los Angeles based Alpha Pup Records who have served as a record label and distribution network for over a decade now, bridging gaps between a multitude of genres and lifestyles. Venturing into 2018 and the label and its distribution components have expanded greatly since the beginning. Alpha Pup has added imprints owned by iconic indie artists such as Milo (Ruby Yacht), Odd Nosdam (Burnco Recs), Jonwayne (Authors Recording Co.), Mr. Carmack (Forward Thinkers Group), Machinedrum (IAMSIAM), and Flying Lotus (Brainfeeder). On the label side, Alpha Pup Records continues to unearth the legacies of artists across the electronic spectrum and find unique releases that have stood the test of time. The core to Alpha Pup Records has expanded to include the jazz imprint World Galaxy, ushering in new releases from a plethora of Los Angeles based artists. This special Alpha Pup mix for Solid Steel highlights these many worlds and is an outline of the culture the label will continue to build on.
