Solid Steel (24th November) In Hour 1 we welcome Jonti who released his album 'Tokorats' earlier this month on Stones Throw. His last album 'Sine & Moon' came out 5 years ago and since then his life has included collaborating with Mark Ronson, BADBADNOTGOOD, King Krule and Earl Sweatshirt; recording with The Internet’s Steve Lacy; rehearsing next door to Madlib in the Stones Throw studio; hanging out with Sean Lennon, and embarking on a 40-date world tour with Gotye. As well as co-writing three songs for The Avalanches’ long-awaited album Wildflower, Jonti recreated their pivotal debut album Since I Left You, reverse engineering 3,500 samples and playing with a 17-piece band at a sold-out performance at the Sydney Opera House. After watching the show, The Avalanches returned the favour and invited Jonti to join them in their touring band. 'Tokorats' is out now and features Odd Future / MellowHype’s Hodgy and Big Dada artist Sampa The Great. He told us;
"This is a mix of my favourite records I collected over the last few years, songs friends would show me, songs that influenced my new record Tokorats, and also some unreleased jams from Mohi and Setwun."
In Hour 2 it's The Diabolical Liberties are Rob Gallagher and Alex Patchwork. Gallagher has a rich musical history releasing leftfield music under a multitude of monikers including Earl Zinger, William Adamson and 2 Banks Of 4 (alongside Demus). He was also co-founder of the legendary Acid Jazz collective Galliano (Talkin’ Loud). The duo just released a new 12” EP titled “All Out For Love” touching on poetry, dissonance, dub, dance and Jazz wave. Nyasha (aka Nubya Garcia) guests on flute and sax.
Describing their mix, Alex says: “I’m not sure if there’s a technical term for this type of mix? Maybe “All over the shop” fits the bill - but hopefully in a good way!? We shoehorned in some of our new stuff - 1 from our new EP and our remix of Mugwisa International Xylophone Group for On The Corner Records - plus a bit of poetry and additional vocals and wiggly fx thrown on top. I hope you enjoy it.”
