Music can be a pretty unifying force, especially for the geographically isolated. Kiran talks to Mikey about music critic David Keenan's first novel, This Is Memorial Device, which evokes this idea while portraying a fictional post-punk band in '70s-'80s small town Scotland.

Risk is a new exhibition by Tim Wagg. It’s centred on the Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Warkworth Project. 

Through a series of printed aluminium panels, Wagg depicts the physical infrastructure of the road alongside the corporate structure underlying the asset’.

Beth had a kōrero with Tim about Risk and the creative thinking behind the project.

A Century of Modern Art is Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki’s latest exhibition, surveying a century of visionary and influential painters who transformed modern art. 

Exhibiting the likes of Claude Monet, Edgar Degas and Vincent van Gogh, and premier examples by pioneering artists of the American and European avant-garde, A Century of Modern Art is an extensive collection of fifty seven works by fifty three artists. 

The exhibition takes the viewer through the evolution of modern art through key defined art movements, beginning with the Impressionists of the 1860s, making its way through movements such as PostImpressionism, Symbolism, Cubism, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. These works revolutionised Western modern art and continue to inspire those in the present. 

Sofia had a kōrero with co-curator and Senior Curator of International Art, Dr Sophie Mathiesson, about the show and working with the Toledo Museum of Art to bring this collection to Tāmaki Makaurau

It is estimated that 50 million people worldwide are currently involved in some form of slavery. Many of those who have been enslaved for their labour, and work as child labourers, produce goods that we import and consume on a regular basis here in Aotearoa. 

Currently, there is no existing legislation in Aotearoa that requires companies to disclose the source of their goods, or to ensure that their products are being ethically produced; giving them free rein to indulge in modern slavery in order to cut their production costs. 

Producer Oto spoke to Dr Susan Maiava, Co-Founder of the ethical directory Fair & Good who have created a petition and open letter urging the government to introduce modern slavery legislation.
