Budget Cuts to Social Services and the Effect on New Zealanders w/ the University of Auckland’s Dr Susan St John: 4th February, 2025.

Following a year of Government Budget cuts in response to the current recession, economists and social service workers have expressed concern about the effects current fiscal policies will have on New Zealanders.

In December 2024, Finance Minister, Nicola Willis, revealed that the government's plans to reduce social service spending could lead to 3900 jobs being cut. Around the same time, Auckland City Mission CEO, Helen Robinson, warned that food banks face closures in 2025.

Producer Athena spoke to Economist, and Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Auckland, Dr Susan St John, about how the recession, and cuts to social services will affect New Zealanders.

Get Action! Say NO to Corporate Tax Cuts! w/ Glenn Barclay from Tax Justice Aotearoa and the better taxes coalition: 26 February, 2025

One of the main promises that National and the coalition ran on in the lead up to the most recent general elections was that of tax relief, by lifting the personal income tax thresholds for low- and middle-income earners and families, and most notably, landlords and large businesses. 

Funding these tax cuts have been widespread austerity measures, with almost  10,000 public sector roles having been cut as of December 2024.

In response to the government’s tax policies Tax Justice Aotearoa have launched a petition calling for capital gains taxes to be introduced and other tax reforms to achieve better social outcomes in Aotearoa.

Oto spoke to Glenn Barclay, Chairperson of Tax Justice Aotearoa and the better taxes coalition, about the petition and the issues with the tax system in Aotearoa.

Tax Cuts w/ Adrianne Sawyer, Julie Anne Genter, & David Seymour: October 7th, 2022

Announcements that government finances are in a healthier state than expected have renewed calls from National and ACT to implement tax cuts.

Finance Minister Grant Robertson said on Wednesday that books are better thanks to higher taxes and lower spending on Covid-19 support. 

A large reason why the government has received more income from taxes is due to revitalisations in the economy seeing more income gained from the goods and services tax.

Regardless, the opposition parties have stated that high taxes are a major contributor to New Zealand's ongoing cost of living crisis. 

These calls came days after the United Kingdom had been put through economic turmoil after prime minister Liz Truss called for tax cuts for the rich, seeing the pound reach a record low value against the dollar. 

This, alongside other factors, has caused Labour and Green to call the concept of tax cuts absurd. 

Liam had a chat to Green Party finance spokesperson Julie Anne Genter and ACT Party Leader/finance spokesperson David Seymour about their opinions on cutting back taxes, but first they spoke to University of Canterbury economics and taxation professor Adrian Sawyer to help frame the conversation.

Mayor's Backtrack On Cutting Arts Funding w Professor Peter O'Connor

On the 17th of May the Office of the Mayor of Auckland released a statement in response to backlash they received about their proposed cuts to arts funding.

In their statement they said that the Mayor supports reducing cuts to arts and social services despite not going into detail on what would change.

Nicholas spoke to Professor Peter O’Connor about the Mayor statement and the future of funding for the arts.

Cuts at Victoria University w/ Senior Lecturer of Education Dr Margaret Gleeson and Lecturer in Theatre Dr James Wenley: 26 June, 2023

Victoria University of Wellington has proposed significant cuts to staff and several courses including secondary education and theatre.

The University is blaming the underfunding of the tertiary sector and a drop in international and domestic student enrolments. 

News and Editorial Director Jessica Hopkins first spoke to Senior Lecturer of Education at Victoria University Dr Margaret Gleeson about the secondary education programme, which is set to be cut completely. 

She also spoke to Lecturer in Theatre Dr James Wenley at Victoria University. They started by discussing how the theatre programme, in particular, will be affected.

Possible Wage Cuts for Parliamentary Workers w/ Rachel Mackintosh - 25th January 2024

With recent news that Parliamentary Services is required to make budget cuts, Parliamentary cleaners are worried that their recently won living wage may be stripped away.

Parliament’s cleaners won the living wage under the previous Labour government, which had committed to a wage increase during the 2017 election campaign.

Castor spoke to Rachel Mackintosh, the National Secretary for E tū, the union covering cleaners, about the potential wage cuts and what they may mean for those affected.
