The debate is over. All life on planet Earth is threatened by human-caused climate change. Within our lifetimes, the oceans will rise, weather will get more extreme, our air, soil, and water will become more tainted and toxic. Animals will perish en masse – and humans are at serious risk too.

New Zealand emits twice as much carbon dioxide per capita as China. Our agriculture and energy industries are already unsustainable. So how will climate change affect our natural world, our society, and our culture? And what can we do to halt the looming catastrophe?

Dr. James Renwick, Dr. Lyn Carter, Dr. Sylvia Nissen, and Dr. Meg Parsons gave their views during a public panel discussion at the University of Auckland, December 17, 2018. The discussion was moderated by Maria Armoudian, Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Auckland.

Last week the Green Party’s Tamatha Paul made comments about police presence in Wellington, particularly how increased police activity made some feel unsafe. She also noted some discriminatory and harmful behaviour from police officers towards Wellington’s homeless population. These comments, presented at a panel hosted by the University of Canterbury’s Greens and Peace Action Ōtautahi, were Paul restating feedback she had received from her constituents in Wellington central. 

The response to Tamatha Paul’s comments was extremely critical from all sides of the political spectrum, involving feedback such as “insane” from prime minister Christopher Luxon, “unwise” and “stupid” from Labour leader Chris Hipkins, and “just weird” from ACT leader David Seymour. The comments and their responses lead to a series of articles across all major New Zealand news networks. 

In our weekly catchup with the National Party, Wire host Castor spoke to MP Tom Rutherford about the substance of Tamatha Paul’s comments and whether the seemingly disproportionate reaction is appropriate.

Life in Forms is a survey exhibition of Pauline Kahurangi Yearbury’s practice, currently showing at Te Uru Waitākere Contemporary Gallery. It is the first solo exhibition of Yearbury’s work in a public art gallery. 

Yearbury is considered a leading practitioner in Māori modernist art and was one of the first Māori artists to introduce Māori mythology into contemporary art. Her work is characterised by a bold and illustrative style, of which she is most renowned for her incised wooden panels featuring figures from Māori whakapapa narratives.

She was one of the first Māori women to attend the Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland, where she worked later as a tutor too.
