Joe Biden steps out of the US Presidential election race w/ the University of Otago's Geoffrey Miller: 22 July, 2024

In breaking news early this morning, President Joe Biden stepped down as the democratic candidate in the election race. It comes following mounting concern around Biden’s age and competence to serve another term as President, as well as a campaign from the party itself for the President to step back. 

Now, only three and half months out from election day the democrats must pick a new candidate, likely to be Vice-President, Kamala Harris. 

Producer Evie spoke to Geopolitical Analyst from the University of Otago, Geoffrey Miller, about what happens next and what effect this will have on the democrats chances of staying in office. We also talk about what impact the result of the election will have here in Aotearoa, as well as on the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Palestine.

Dropping Seven Million Kūtai into the Hauraki Gulf w/ Chief Executive for the Ngāti Manuhere Settlement Trust, Nicola Macdonald

On the 29th July, 2024, Ngāti Manuhere Settlement Trust, in partnership with Revive our Gulf and the University of Auckland, dropped seven million kūtai, green-lipped mussels, into the Hauraki Gulf.

This comes as part of an initiative to restore the depleted kūtai population in the Hauraki Gulf. It is hoped that restoring these reefs will have a significant positive impact in reversing human-caused damage to the gulf and it's ecosystems.

Kūtai are vital in providing shelter, food, and protection to local species, but their resources have been depleted due to human activities such as dredging.

Producer Josef spoke to the Chief Executive for the Ngāti Manuhere Settlement Trust, Nicola Macdonald, about the initiative, what it means for the Gulf, and how similar schemes can be implemented across Aotearoa.

Ngāpuhi opposition to the proposed repeal of section 7AA of the Oranga Tamariki Act w the University of Auckland's Emmy Rakete: 5th August, 2024

On Friday producer Evie also talked to criminology lecturer at the University of Auckland Emmy Rakete, who is Ngāpuhi, about her concerns surrounding the repeal of Section 7AA of the Oranga Tamariki act. 

We also talked about the Ngāpuhi hikoi taking place today in opposition to the act, and what they believe the government should be doing next.

University of Auckland Course Cuts w Nicole Wallace from the Tertiary Education Union 23rd September, 2024

Around mid-August this year, senior management at the University of Auckland made an announcement saying that they were looking to cut a number of small postgraduate and undergraduate courses in the Faculty of Arts with less than 60 and 30 students respectively. 

The University said that the cuts were being proposed to “optimise” course offerings and address classroom spacing issues. They also said that the cuts came about as a result of a routine review of courses regularly conducted by the University.

The announcement resulted in widespread outcry and condemnation by the University of Auckland’s senior academics and lecturers, saying that the University gave them a limited timeframe to review and contest the changes, and the decision to cut courses such as Huarahi Māori will have an impact on marginalised communities.

Oto spoke to Nicole Wallace, an organiser at the Tertiary Education Union who works with lecturers at the University of Auckland to discuss the course cut proposal and its implications for senior academics and lecturers.

CHOGM, Agri-DENZ and Youth Justice Residences w/ The Green Party's Ricardo Menendez March: 30 October 2024

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has recently returned from the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa, also known as CHOGM, where one of the main topics of discussion was the impact of climate change and extreme weather events on island nations. 

While attending CHOGM, Chris Luxon told media and other delegates that he was concerned about rising sea levels and the pollution of water bodies in the Pacific, and that the government was doing “everything they could” to combat climate change and achieve net zero emissions.

Luxon’s attendance at CHOGM and stated commitment to mitigating emissions and sea level rises has been at odds with environmentalists and experts, who’ve said that the government’s domestic climate and industrial policies go directly against the Prime Minister’s statements in Apia, with measures such as the Fast-Track Approvals bill and reinstating of offshore gas exploration preventing New Zealand from achieving net zero emissions and contributing to the very same problems he was discussing.

For their weekly catchup, Oto spoke to the Green Party’s Ricardo Menendez-March about Prime Minister Chris Luxon’s visit to Samoa for CHOGM, and his defence of the government’s climate policies. 

They also discussed a new partnership between Germany and Aotearoa to combat emissions in the agricultural sector, and the Green party’s call to close Youth Justice residences.

The Post Primary Teachers Association’s Paid Union Meetings w/ President of the PPTA, Chris Abercrombie: 12th November, 2024

Education Minister Erica Stanford and Associate Minister David Seymour put out a press release last Friday accusing the Post Primary Teachers Association of disrupting students’ learning. 

The press release continues that the PPTA is prioritising ideology over students, and that the meetings create a poor example.

Stanford says “We can’t expect students to value the importance of education and attendance when adults walk off the job.”

To address these claims, Wire host Castor spoke to president of the PPTA, Chris Abercrombie, about the press release and the PPTA’s concerns for teaching in Aotearoa.

State of the World’s Children Report w/ UNICEF Aotearoa Director of Communications, Tania Sawicki Mead

What does the future hold for the world’s children? Twenty-fifty is now twenty-six years away, and a recent report made by UNICEF makes predictions based off of three megatrends they have developed.

By the twenty-fifties, the global child population is expected to stabilise at 2.3 billion, the most substantial areas of growth being in South Asia and most of the African continent. These areas already struggle to meet children’s basic needs, which are also now affected by a rapidly changing climate and a lack of adequate digital infrastructure.

Half of the world’s children today - 1 billion - live in countries where there is a greater risk of climate and environmental hazards. Adding on to this is the gradual increase of urbanisation, the development of compact city living. Without adequate infrastructure to support this influx, these factors will jeopardise the future development of children.

The future is ours to shape, and to continue down a ‘business as usual’ is the easiest path, but will create a worse reality. To understand these ideas in full, Sasha spoke to UNICEF Aotearoa Director of Communications, Tania Sawicki Mead about the recent report and its implications for the future of global childhood.
