New Liberation Library Aotearoa mural w/ Chris McBride and Tigilau Ness: 17th January, 2025

A new mural by Liberation Library Aotearoa has been unveiled on Edinburgh Street off Karangahape Road.

Inspired by artist and producer Chris McBride and event producer and consultant Tigilau Ness’ travel together to the Black Panther Party’s 50th Anniversary celebrations in Oakland California in 2016, the mural project seeks to honour the historical presence of the Polynesian Panthers and the Black Panther Party and the social justice issues they stand for.

In checking in with the past through such groups, as well as historical events like the Dawn Raids in Aotearoa, these murals also speak to the current and future hopes for the well-being of Pasifika in Aotearoa. 

The artists involved in this latest project are Numangatini Mackenzie, Toa Sieke Taihia, Huriana Kopeke Te-Aho, Simon Endres and Chris McBride.

Weekly Catchup w/ The Green Party’s Ricardo Menendez March: 19 February, 2025

The government recently announced a new fund of $30 million dollars towards biodiversity and tourism infrastructure projects. 

The $19 million in this fund going towards biodiversity funding would be invested in: Stopping the spread of wallabies and managing pest populations in National Parks, targeted predator control to protect native bird species and wilding pine removal.

Just before this announcement, members of Destiny Church held disruptions at multiple pride events over the weekend, including one at Te Atatū library in West Auckland which resulted in a number of library staff and bystanders getting injured in the confrontation.

Additionally, a deportation notice was given to Daman Kumar - an 18 year old of Indian origin who was born and raised in Aotearoa, telling him to leave the country and migrate to India by Monday this week.

Get Action! Concerned Communities of Bream Bay against Marine Sand Mining w/ Brenda Leeuwenberg: 12 February, 2025

The McCallum Brothers is an Auckland-based Sand mining company who have created a proposal to mine eight million cubic metres of sand from the seabed of the Bream Bay in the North Island over the next 35 years.

While initially considered a low priority project, the proposal has recently been fast-tracked under new legislation, prompting opposition from local Iwi and Hapu, as well as concerned residents across the bream bay, for the projectsproject's potential impacts on local marine life and the region’s fishing industries.

For this week’s Get Action! Oto spoke to Brenda Leeuwenberg - a resident of Ruakaka, who started a petition on behalf of the communities along the Bream Bay, calling on the regional government to oppose the project and revoke its fast-track consents.

The Green Desk: The Street Art Bike Challenge w/ Brent Bielby: 26 March, 2025

Ever wondered what it would be like to bike in an Art Gallery? Well now you can, for the city is your gallery. In collaboration with EcoFest 2025 and various New Zealand artists, Bike Hubs have set up a Street Art Bike Challenge. Now, anyone can ride around the city, discover amazing works of art and win great prizes. 

This week, Green Desk Producer Liam speaks to Brent Bielby, manager of EcoMatters’ Bike Hubs, a community project aimed at encouraging more people to take up cycling. He explains the goal behind the challenge, as well as how cycling can contribute to a healthy lifestyle and provide a source of freedom and fun.  

You can take part in this challenge yourself. All you need to do is take out your bike, pedal over to the artworks, and upload a photo of you and your bike. The challenge will run until the 22nd of April, and you can find a map of all the locations and trails on the EcoMatters website.

Weekly Catchup w/ The Green Party's Ricardo Menendez-March: 2 April, 2025

Just recently, Workplace Relations and Safety Minister, Brooke Van Velden, announced sweeping changes to health and safety regulations for businesses that she described as “low-risk”.

Some of the changes involved: narrowing the focus of the Health and Safety at Work Act to risks only causing death, serious injury or illness, creating a hotline for the public to report “overzealous” road cone placement and reducing "tick-box and safety activities" such as psychosocial harm policies for small businesses. 

Around this same period of time, Greens MPs Tamatha Paul and Benjamin Doyle received intense media and political scrutiny for comments they made at a university panel and on social media respectively, with the backlash towards Doyle forcing them to abstain from parliament this week.

The Greens recently issued a call to the government to scrap their proposed changes to Early Childhood Care, which involve recognising qualifications other than early childhood teaching qualifications, removing up to 74% of ECE licensing criteria and removing requirements for regular updates and family.

In their weekly catchup with the Green Party’s Ricardo Menendez-March, Oto spoke to him about the party’s take on all of these issues.

Political "fear-mongering" on Auckland Council's Waitākere Ranges management proposal w/ Councillor Shane Henderson: 01 May, 2025

Numerous political figures including Ministers Shane Jones and David Seymour have spoken out in the media this week with allegations that Auckland Council is trying to usher in ‘co-governance’ on a local level, with their proposal on the management of the Waitākere Ranges.

CEO of Te Kawerau ā Maki Edward Ashby called out the political lashback as “fear-mongering” and ‘misinformation’, affirming that the proposal is not actually a co-governance structure. 

The proposal is for a decision-making committee of 50% representation from the Crown and tangata whenua to manage the land under a deed of acknowledgement.

The council says the deed of acknowledgement is in line with the Waitākere Ranges Heritage Act 2008, and follows on from the existing management structures in place.

Littering in Council Parks, Illegal Dumping increases across Auckland, & Auckland as the 'premier tech city' of New Zealand w/ Councillor Julie Fairey: 22 May, 2025

Last year, Auckland Council removed 30% of bins from public places with the hopes of saving about $9.5 million over an eight year period. While the council didn’t foresee an increase in littering, last week Stuff published an article sharing the frustrations of residents who observed a growing litter problem in council parks.

Illegal dumping has also been on the rise across Auckland.
 With more than 1300 reports per month, the cost of retrieving illegally dumped items is about $2.7 million every year and rising.

Also Mayor Wayne Brown has announced that he wants to see Auckland become the “premier tech city” of New Zealand to boost our global influence and reputation—-- calling on the government to establish the new Advanced Technology Institute here, which he says could play a key role in guiding new start-ups, so ideas don’t ‘die on the vine’.

The 2025 Budget on Māori initiatives, deferral of debating the suspension of Te Pāti Māori MPs w/ Te Pāti Māori’s Takutai Kemp: 26 May, 2025

Last week, Finance Minister, Nicola Willis, announced her ‘growth’ Budget for 2025.

In the Budget, multiple initiatives received a boost in funding. 

Operational funding and capital funding for Māori education received a $54 million boost and $50 million boost respectively for Māori learner success, with a $14 million injection for Māori wardens, Pacific wardens, and the Māori women’s welfare league.

However, a variety of Māori initiatives have faced substantial cuts.

The Māori Development Fund has had $20 million cut over four years, $32.5 million has been cut from Māori housing initiatives, and $375.5 million cut to the Kāhui Ako programme.

Labour’s Māori Development spokesperson, Willie Jackson, claims that overall, in Budget 2025, Māori initiatives are seeing cuts of roughly $750 million.

For our weekly catchup, News and Editorial Director and Monday Wire Host, Joel, spoke to Te Pāti Māori’s Takutai Kemp about Budget 2025 and it’s impacts on Māori initiatives.

They also spoke about the debate on the potential suspension of Te Pāti Māori co-leaders, Rawiri Waititi, and Debbie Ngarewa-Packer, and MP Hana Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke, being pushed back prior to the Budget debate. 

As well as this, notably, during the Budget debate itself, both Waititi and Ngarewa-Packer were absent.

Weekly Catchup w/ The Green Party’s Ricardo Menendez-March: 4 June, 2025

Last week the government announced a series of changes to 16 national direction instruments under the Resource Management Act that would change the way councils implement local plans and rules.

Minister Responsible for RMA Reform, Chris Bishop, described the changes as removing ‘unnecessary regulations’ for primary industries and investment, with the main changes being: removing freshwater management regulations for councils, removing regulations for the construction of mines and quarries and removing restrictions on non-intensive grazing of beef, cattle and deer in wetlands.

In that same week, Associate Education Minister, David Seymour made a series of changes to the pay parity scheme impacting primary school teachers, where education centres would not need to factor additional and higher qualifications when working out teacher’s starting salaries.

And, just recently, Workplace Relations and Safety minister Brooke van Velden recently announced that she’d be making a series of changes to WorkSafe in order to shift regulators priorities from enforcement to advice.
