International Desk: The Youth-Led Anti-Corruption Protests in Nepal w/ University of Queensland’s Dr DB Subedi: 18 September, 2025

Last week, thousands of young people began mass protests in Nepal, sparked by a social media ban but over larger frustrations with government corruption.

The protests have led to Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign, especially in the wake of public outrage over the killing of 22 people during the police crackdown on protestors. 

For International Desk, Wire Host Caeden spoke to University of Queensland Lecturer in Political Science Dr DB Subedi about the circumstances behind these protests, how they fit into the wider region, and the misinformation surrounding them.

Cosmic Factories with Professor Jan Eldridge: January 19, 2023

Astrophysics researchers from the University of Auckland have recently released a report into the origins of binary neutron star mergers, colloquially dubbed cosmic factories.

The team was led by doctor Heloise Stevens with inner teams led by Jan Eldrdge looking at how the events take place and what causes them. 

The scientists utilised a captured star merger that we viewed in 2017, and analysed the beginnings before looking at how they produce elements like gold, silver and uranium.

Weekly Catchup w/ The Green Party’s Ricardo Menendez-March: December 11th, 2024

The Green party recently released He Ara Anamata - the Green party’s emissions reduction plan.

The document covers more than 10 areas of the economy and energy Sector that a Greens-led government would be looking to adapt to minimise carbon emissions and protect the natural landscapes of Aotearoa. 

It also comes 5 months after the government released their own draft emissions plan. Numerous experts pointed out that the government is behind on their own plan’s targets to meet the crucial emissions budget for 2031-2035.

For their weekly catchup, Oto spoke to the Green Party’s Ricardo Menendez-March to discuss the party’s new emissions reduction plan and how they would address climate and the economy in a greens-led government.

I Runga O Ngā Puke (travels over feeling) w/ Jamie R H: 23rd January, 2026.

Jamie R H is a Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington based artist and curator, primarily working within spaces of language to produce site specific artworks. That both draws from, and speaks to her familial histories within Te Matau-a-Māui Hawkes’ Bay.

Her current exhibition I Runga O Ngā Puke (travels over feeling) on at Window Gallery showcases a durational language-based artwork,  presented through a wall mounted LED sign. Displaying a stunning presentation of language in an act of constant movement. An unfolding of text that does not seek closure, but instead seeks to withhold it. Dazzling viewers with small glimpses of language that flow into a fragmented river of stories. The LED sign embodies this role as an actor of sorts, in a state of a continuous performance of language, time, and movement. 

Maya caught up with Jamie about the show and overall practice.

COVID-19 Border Testing Order w/ Chris Hipkins: November 19, 2020

With COVID still here and Christmas quickly approaching while cases continue to rise across the globe, the government announced this morning a new order that will be put in place. This order is in relation to border testing, where a number of changes will take place. They are:

·        Increasing the frequency of testing for ship pilots and some other port workers who carry out work on affected ships, from fortnightly to weekly,

·        Increasing testing frequency for some workers who carry out work on aircraft that have arrived from outside of New Zealand, from fortnightly to weekly.

·        Mandatory fortnightly testing for port workers not already covered,

·        Mandatory fortnightly testing for airport airside and landside workers not already covered who interact with international arriving or transiting passengers

James spoke to minister in charge of the COVID-19 response, Chris Hipkins, about these changes, and started off by asking about the impact of testing weekly instead of fortnightly

Compulsory Treatment Orders w/ Dr Ben Beaglehole: October 26, 2021

Compulsory Treatment Orders, or CTO’s, are legally mandated orders which require mentally ill patients to undergo psychiatric treatment. CTO’s have been regarded as a contentious and coercive form of mental health treatment for patients struggling with serious mental illnesses, as the practice has been criticised for imposing restrictions on patients which impact their own personal freedom.  

A study from University of Otago that explored CTO’s found that the treatment leads to fewer and shorter hospital admissions. Joe talks to Dr Ben Beaglehole, a Senior Lecturer from the University of Otago and co-author of the study, on the matter.

Aotearoa Makes Biggest Electric Bus Order in Australasia w/ Darek Koper: November 10, 2021

This week it was announced that Tāmaki Makaurau will be receiving a further 152 battery electric buses for its roads; an order that is described as the biggest electric bus order in Australasia. 

The Auckland Transport press release said that an increase in the number of electric vehicles, operating on Auckland Transport’s bus services, will actively support the goals of Te Tāruke-ā-Tāwhiri: Auckland's Climate Plan, which has a focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as well as preparing Auckland for the impacts of climate change.

Zazi spoke with AT Metro’s Decarbonisation Manager, Darek Koper. They spoke about how these electric buses will impact the environment, how transport emissions are currently affecting climate change, and when we should start to see these buses driving around Auckland. They also touched on what other steps AT Transport are making to reduce emissions in Aotearoa.
