Over the weekend the Green Party held their annual general meeting, which raised many questions. The meeting was mainly closed to the media and the direction of the party seemed unclear. Both supporters of the party and members of the media are asking whether the Greens have compromised too much in their confidence and supply agreement with the government this term and whether they are shifting too far away from their left of centre political position. Last week the Green Party announced their ‘Pledge to Renters’, a housing policy that would implement rent controls, a landlord register and a rental warrant of fitness, among other things.
Announcing the policy, co-leaders James Shaw and Marama Davidson said that in the first 100 days of a new government, the Green Party would implement this housing policy to ensure that “everyone who rents always has a safe, healthy and affordable place to call home".
