Last Thursday the Zero Carbon Bill was passed into legislation by a unanimous vote in Parliament. Jemima spoke to Green Party co-leader James Shaw about the law and what impact it will have on the global movement for climate change action.
We are back with our weekly chat with Green party co-leader James Shaw. The Minister attended the climate change conference in Madrid (COP25) in December 2019 and we caught up on criticisms surrounding lack of substantial action and indigenious inclusivity. We also talked about proposed changes to the carbon emissions trading schemes, and the roll out of climate change education in schools.
This week Sherry continues the discussion on the Emissions Trading Scheme with Green Party co-leader James Shaw. He responds to some criticisms brought up by Sherry from economist Geoff Bertram on the proposed ETS Bill. Secondly, they also discusses the public housing crisis and the lack of affordable homes.
But first, Sherry begins by asking James to respond to Geoff’s critisms regarding the lack of transparency in the proposed ETS bill.
This week Sherry spoke to Green party co-leader James Shaw on the recent travel bans in response to the Coronavirus outbreak, and the distribution of funds in the infrastructure plan. Sherry and James discuss the decarbonisation of hospitals and schools, and the skypath which have been given boosts in the plan. Sherry begin by asking James if he’s pleased about the distriubtion and prioritsation of issues in the infrastructure fund.
This week we follow up with Green party co-leader James Shaw after the Prime Minister's announcement of $300,000 funding into HIV research and support. Monday wire host Sherry also discuss broader concerns with of mental health resources for the LGBTQ+ community and high rates of homelessness with James. They also speak on a possible conversion therapy ban. Conversion therapy is the harmful practise of manipulation, physical and emotional abuse, through pseudoscience to try and change someone’s sexual idenity or gender identity.
This week, Sherry speaks to Green party co-leader James Shaw on Political transparency regarding political donations. The serious fraud office is currently investigating political party NZ First, and have charged an ex National MP as well. James and Sherry also touch on press freedom, after NZ first took photographs and followed a jounalist investigating these fraud claims. James also discusses the shift to Lower Emission vehicles, after plans for a subsidy scheme are put on hold.
Green party Co-leader James shaw explains the recent changes to the default Kiwi saver scheme, wich will no longer invest in companies which produce fossil fuel. James also discusses the Organics Products Bill, which hopes to develop and solidify the definition and processes of labelling a food product organic.
This week Sherry Zhang chats to Green party co-leader James Shaw on what Alert level 2 might look like, we also speak on student being charged for empty student accomodation and the Pastoral Care Act. We also touch briefly on the Jame's response to the memo sent out by the Prime Minister’s office which coincided with a document dump by the government on Friday afternoon. We speak on the Waste Minimisation fund as a way of creating more green jobs post COVID-19. First , Sherry begin by asking James what he’s most looking forward to post Alert level 3.
