Last year the New Zealand Fire Service attended over 5,200 structure fires, and within these there were 18 avoidable deaths caused by residential fires. New Zealand Fire Service launched a world-first initiative on Tuesday – a 360 degree and virtual reality (VR) experience – Escape My House. For the first time ever, the public can experience a real house fire first-hand and, along the way, learn why they need an escape plan. In this project, the public can experience online a house fire first-hand, using all real video footage from an actual house burning down. bFM reporter Jess Smith spoke to New Zealand Fire Service Station Officer and current Training Officer, Chris Kennedy, to learn more about the project.
This week, Ximena & Adam hear about some exciting new developments being forged by groups in New Zealand: Generation Zero's new Zero Carbon Act, Greater Auckland's Congestion Free Network 2 proposal & new research coming out of the University of Otago that looks at growing human teeth. Allan Blackman pops in for a morbid episode Dear Science, where he fleshes out the nutritional benefits of cannibalism (or more correctly, the lack of them), as well as discussing the history and uses of chemical weapons. We also hear from the curator of an upcoming series of talks at AUT called Critical Conversations, which examine the different ways algorithms and code shape our everyday lives.
Earlier this year, Revenue Minister Judith Collins announced a planned crackdown on tax-dodging by multinational corporations. Under the plan, various loopholes are to be closed, in order to make it harder for untaxed money to be moved outside of New Zealand. However, there are plenty of other ways for people to reduce their tax bill, such as negative gearing, which went unmentioned by Minister Collins. To gain a greater understanding of what negative gearing is, producer Ben spoke to Deborah Russel, a senior lecturer on taxation for Massey University and electoral candidate for the Labour party.

In New Zealand, Māori incarceration rates are disproportionately high - in 2015, 15% of New Zealand’s population identified as being Māori, while they currently make up around half of the prison population. Earlier this week the idea of Māori-run prisons resurfaced again within the media, with Labour corrections spokesperson Kelvin Davis saying it’s one solution to tackling high Māori incarceration rates, and Marama Fox telling us on The Wire yesterday that this is a solution the Māori Party has repeatedly raised with the government. But not everyone agrees this will be an effective way to approach this problem. Māori prison abolitionist and member of Pacific Panther Network, Sina Brown-Davis, told Ximena her thoughts about the proposal.
