For our weekly catch up with Te Pāti Māori’s Takutai Kemp, News and Editorial Director, and Monday Wire Host Joel, spoke to her about the coalition government’s free school lunch programme, and the recent comments from Prime Minister, Christopher Luxon, regarding this, the first reading of The Land Transport Management (Time of Use Charging) Amendment Bill, and changes made to free bowel cancer screening.

For our weekly catch up with the ACT Party’s Simon Court, Joel spoke to him about the changes to free bowel cancer screening, NCEA testing, and the Labour Party’s portfolio reshuffle.

Producer Evie spoke to the Chief Executive of Bowel Cancer NZ, Peter Huskinson, on the changes to free bowel cancer screening, and his organisation’s opinion that this move will be “a step backwards for health equity,” for Māori and Pacific people.

Joel spoke to the Director at E Tū Union, Michael Wood, about Canadian-born billionaire James Grenon purchasing 9.3% shares at NZME, which owns media outlets such as The Herald and Newstalk ZB, and the union’s concerns regarding this move.

Evie spoke to the Chair of Local Government New Zealand’s electoral reform working group, Nick Smith, on calls to make local governments four-year terms, in light of government introducing a four year parliamentary term.

He spoke to Dr Sarah Kapeli, A lecturer in the school of psychology at the University of Auckland, about a study she and a team of researchers did on the wellbeing of students from minority communities at the University of Auckland.

And he speak to Dr Kerryn Galokale, a PHD Graduate in Pacific Studies at the University of Auckland, about the prevalence of Sorcery Related Violence in the Solomon Islands.

Today, Sasha spoke with Chris Ogden, Associate Professor in Global Studies at the University of Auckland about the United States potential decision of leaving the United Nations and the implications this may have for global order.

Surge in homelessness in Auckland and Auckland Council new trial AI customer service initiative w/ Councillor Julie Fairey: 13 March 2025

Auckland Council’s Community Committee has sent a ‘please help’ letter to the government after reports from their Community Impact team showed a 53% rise in the number of people sleeping rough over the past four months.

This follows changes last year by the Ministry of Social Development to the rules surrounding emergency housing, introducing stricter entry criteria and new requirements which make it difficult to stay. 

While Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, earlier this week, denied that these changes have led to an increase in homelessness, Housing First Auckland programme manager Rami Alrudani said that outreach workers have been stretched thin, dealing with “more and more homelessness every day”.

Producer Sara spoke with Councillor Julie Fairey about the rise in homelessness in Tāmaki Makaurau. 

As well, Auckland Council are trialling an AI digital assistant to help improve their customer support services.

The ‘Ask Auckland Council’ pilot, presented at February’s Revenue, Expenditure and Value Committee, is being funded by Google Cloud at no cost to ratepayers.

Auckland Council receives 1.5 million calls every year and coordinates region-wide services across multiple platforms. The new system is designed to bridge the gap between Aucklanders and digital services, reducing the effort required to seek out information

Starting on the topic of homelessness, Sara asked Julie if she was surprised to see a stark increase in the latest data around the number of people sleeping rough.

Continued issues with school lunches and the criminalisation of wage theft w/ the National Party’s Tom Rutherford: 18th March, 2025

Beginning near the start of February this year, the government’s new school lunch program has faced criticism after criticism since its introduction. From supply issues to quality and quantity concerns to dietary considerations and heating issues, the program has had its fair share of teething issues. 

Now the government claims these issues have been ironed out, others continue to arise. Libelle, one of the school lunch providers contracted by the School Lunch collective recently went into liquidation. Two weeks ago, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon also told parents concerned with the program to “go make a marmite sandwich.”

Also in politics this past week we’ve seen Labour MP Camilla Belich’s private members bill passed by all parties excluding National and ACT. The Crimes (Theft by employer) amendment bill would move wage theft from a civil issue to a criminal issue, which National says is unnecessary and time consuming.

Winston Peters and Marco Rubio’s Meeting, the Ipsos Issues Monitor Survey, and Israel’s Strikes on Gaza w/ Te Pāti Māori’s Takutai Kemp: 24 March, 2025

Recently, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister, Winston Peters, met with his US counterpart; the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.

Despite this meeting, not much is known about the details of what was discussed, however, the two did discuss tariffs, which Aotearoa may be affected by unless the country is exempt from the current upcoming agricultural tariffs.

Sam Uffindell’s private members bill and Winston Peters’ ‘War on Woke’ w/ the National Party’s Tom Rutherford: 25th March, 2025

National MP Sam Uffindell lodged his private members bill last week, which the party claims is aimed at ensuring equal voting rights in local government. However, multiple Māori leaders say the bill ignores representation issues and the purpose of Māori wards. 

Māori representation positions on councils and committees aim to ensure and protect representation for Māori, rather than provide a specific privilege. 

Also in politics this past week, Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters delivered his State of the Nation speech where he spoke about New Zealand First’s direction moving forward. Among his main new talking points were the party’s ‘War on Woke’ and his plans to ‘Make New Zealand First Again’. 

In our weekly catchup with National’s Tom Rutherford, Wire host Castor asked about Sam Uffindell’s new bill and how the national party would respond to Peters’ new policies, starting with the private members bill.

Green MP, Tamatha Paul’s comments about the police w/ People Against Prison Aotearoa’s Dr Emmy Rākete: 31 March, 2025

Recently, Green MP, Tamatha Paul’s comments have made headlines across mainstream New Zealand political coverage.

At a panel with the University of Canterbury Greens and Peace Action Ōtautahi, Paul said Pōneke did not want to see police officers everywhere, as “for a lot of people it makes them feel unsafe,” as well as accusing police of “waiting for homeless people to leave their spot and throwing out their belongings” which she sez is a comment she received from a local MP from the Downtown Community Ministry and Salvation Army.

Paul has received backlash from some politicians, including Prime Minister, Christopher Luxon, and Opposition Leader, Chris Hipkins.

However, many believe that what Paul said has been sensationalised.

On Friday, News and Editorial Director and Monday Wire Host, Joel, spoke to the Press Spokesperson for People Against Prisons Aotearoa and Criminology Lecturer at the University of Auckland, Dr Emmy Rākete, about Paul’s comments, and how she is viewing this whole situation.

They started off by asking her how she is feeling about the reception of Paul's comments.

International Desk: The impact of former Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte’s arrest by the International Criminal Court w/ Dr Yvonne Breitwieser-Faria: 3 April, 2025

Former Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has been arrested by the International Criminal Court and will be tried in the Hague for crimes against humanity.

This comes as the ICC faces criticism for other, more controversial current arrest warrants, including those against Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Wire Host Caeden spoke to Dr Yvonne Breitwieser-Faria from Curtin University in Perth about Duterte’s arrest and broader issues facing the ICC.

Treaty Principles Bill Voted Down, Members Bill Proposing to Remove University Opportunities Based on Race and Female MPs Receiving More Abuse w/ The ACT Party’s Simon Court: 14 April, 2025

Last week the Treaty Principles Bill was voted down at its second reading, the vote was 112 opposed, to 11 in favour - with only the ACT Party supporting the bill. 

During the reading, MPs from all  parties submitted their views on the bill. Labour Leader Chris Hipkins calling it a ‘grubby little bill’ that would ‘forever be a stain on our country.’ National’s Paul Goldsmith saying the bill was ‘a crude way to handle a very sensitive topic.’ And Te Pati Maori’s Hana Rawhiti Maipi Clarke who has continually strongly opposed the bill saying ‘this bill hasn't been stopped; this bill has been absolutely annihilated.’ 

ACT Leader David Seymour sustains that he will continue to push the bill, but Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has vehemently denied entertaining any other iteration of the issue. 

For our weekly catch up with the ACT Party Producer Evie spoke to Simon Court about the demise of the bill. 

They also discussed a members bill from ACT’s Dr Parmjeet Parmar aiming to remove university opportunities based on race, as well as a new study revealing female MPs are experiencing higher levels of abuse.
