Te Ahu o te Reo Māori funding and the 149 projects for consideration under the Fast-Track Approvals Bill w/ the National Party’s Katie Nimon: 8th October, 2024

Our catchup with the National party is back on this week with our usual MP Katie Nimon. Wire host Castor started off by asking about Te Ahu o te Reo Māori, a program supporting teachers and teaching staff to integrate tikanga and te reo Māori into their classrooms. The funding for the program was recently cut, with education minister Erica Stanford pointing to poor mathematics outcomes as a justification for funding reallocation. 

They also asked about the Fast Track Approvals bill, now that the list of 149 projects is out for consideration. The types of projects on the list range widely, from the expected housing, energy, and infrastructure developments to the less expected Eden Park and prison upgrades.

Beth had a kōrero with Tāmaki Makaurau-based artist Christian Dimick about his latest exhibition Prattle Rabbit, showing at Grace Gallery until January 25th.

A new mural by Liberation Library Aotearoa has been unveiled on Edinburgh Street off Karangahape Road. In checking in with the past through the Polynesian Panthers and Black Panthers, as well as historical events like the Dawn Raids in Aotearoa, these murals speak to the current and future hopes for the well-being of Pasifika in Aotearoa. Sofia had a kōrero with Chris McBride and Tigilau Ness about the project.

For Stage Direction, Alice joins us in the studio to chat with actors Siobhan and Chris about Shakespeare in the Park 2025, taking place from Jan 18th-Feb 15th.

Weekly Catchup w/ The Green Party’s Ricardo Menendez March: 19 February, 2025

The government recently announced a new fund of $30 million dollars towards biodiversity and tourism infrastructure projects. 

The $19 million in this fund going towards biodiversity funding would be invested in: Stopping the spread of wallabies and managing pest populations in National Parks, targeted predator control to protect native bird species and wilding pine removal.

Just before this announcement, members of Destiny Church held disruptions at multiple pride events over the weekend, including one at Te Atatū library in West Auckland which resulted in a number of library staff and bystanders getting injured in the confrontation.

Additionally, a deportation notice was given to Daman Kumar - an 18 year old of Indian origin who was born and raised in Aotearoa, telling him to leave the country and migrate to India by Monday this week.
