Last week Lillian was looking into the start of term 2. Lillian rang her cousins, Winter and Beatris, who are under rāhui in their home in Waitakere to see how their first day of term went. The main issue it seemed to them was that they didn’t get to see their friends during the school day. This chat was last week, and their mum told me they were appreciating the shift back into a routine. This week, it's been a little more difficult. Their mum talked about figuring out how they work, the two different platforms they are being given work on plus the emails. The challenges are unprecedented and this is important to acknowledge - for children for parents and for teachers. Emily Writes is an author and columnist for the Spinoff Parents, as well as a mum of two. Last week she wrote about the way online learning is a major shift in education and that we shouldn’t put so much pressure on kids, teachers or parents at this moment. Lillian asked her what her initial response to that shift was.
After 8 years of negotiations New Zealand has finally signed the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, or RCEP trade deal, with the Association of South East Asian Nations, plus China, Japan, Australia and South Korea.
Some things to note are:
The RCEP was signed with 15 Asia and Pacific nations, almost a third of the worlds population.
This was negotiated behind closed doors, which means New Zealanders didn't know what was being agreed on until it was already signed and didn't get the opportunity to have much of a say. This is the same problem that many kiwis had with the TPPA trade agreement.
India is not part of the deal, they pulled out. If they were it would be very economically positive for New Zealand. But the rest of the countries we already have Free Trade Ageements with, so many are asking what the point of signing onto something that could restrict us, when we might only get 0.3% increase of GDP out of it.
Ayana spoke with Minister for Trade and Export Growth Damien O'Connor and It's Our Future Spokesperson Edward Miller about the impact of the trade deal on New Zealand.
Today on the Tuesday Wire, Lyric Waiwiri-Smith talks to Dr. Elizabeth Kerekere of the Green Party about the need for an independent Māori Health Authority.
Jemima Huston looked into the Government’s $100 million plus deal with tech giant Amazon. Jemima speaks to National Party spokesperson for economic development Todd McClay, New Zealand film producer John Barnett and Green Party spokesperson on economic development Chlöe Swarbrick. We touch on their thoughts on the deal, the impact a state relationship with Amazon will have on employment in Aotearoa's film and TV industry, as well as the potential problems that could arise between Amazon’s reputation for treating worker poorly and New Zealand’s Hobbit Law which has left all those working in the film industry as independent contractors without the same protections of employees or rights to unionise.
