Proposed reform to Auckland Transport and council-controlled organisations and rates w/ Councillor Julie Fairey: 15th August, 2024

Last week, Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown announced plans to ‘dethrone’ Auckland Transport and instead put elected representatives in control. 

With additional plans to abolish the council’s development agency, Eke Panuku Auckland, and its events and economic development agency Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, the proposal is part of Council’s biggest restructure of council controlled organisations since the Super City was formed in 2010. 

Additionally, last week when Producer Sofia spoke to Councillor Shane Henderson about Council’s average 6.8% rates increase announced in its long-term plan this year we received two texts from listeners informing us their rates bills saw a 25-29% increase. 

In other news, figures released from an Official Information Act request found last week that in the last five financial years Auckland Council has paid out $315 million in ‘secret’ financial settlements for defective buildings, weathertightness issues, employment settlements and civil damages claims on behalf of ratepayers. 

Sofia spoke to Councillor Julie Fairey about these topics.

Auckland’s upcoming train stations and power outages on the Western line w/ Councillor Julie Fairey: 24th October, 2024

Maungawhau station, formerly Mt Eden station, closed in July 2020 for reconstruction as part of the City Rail Link. Delays during the COVID-19 lockdowns extended the construction process, and the station is now expected to reopen in early 2024. 

Starting on October 14th, Western line trains have been running at reduced frequency to allow for testing at the station, indicating that the station may be almost completed.

Trains across the city have also been affected by unplanned disruptions over the past few months, most recently on the Western line with a series of power outages. 

For City Counselling this week I asked Councillor Julie Fairey about the timeline on Maungawhau station, the upcoming Te Waihorotiu and Karanga-ā-hape stations, and power outages across the rail network.

Proposals for Mount Smart Road and Auckland peak-hour congestion & Ngā Hapori Momoho grants for community projects w/ Councillor Julie Fairey: June, 05 2025

Auckland Transport are seeking community feedback on a proposal for a new T3 transit lane on Mount Smart Road to relieve congestion during peak times heading towards the Royal Oak roundabout.

Between better public transport systems, a ‘time of use’ charge, and different ways of managing Auckland traffic, Producer Sara asks Councillor Julie Fairey about how Auckland Council hopes to reduce peak-time congestion as the city’s population grows.

She also talk to Julie Fairey about the recent allocation of funds to community-led projects through Ngā Hapori Momoho. This year, the grant which aims to “improve financial security, improve health outcomes, and grow community and intercultural connection” has approved funding for eleven community groups, six of which are either Māori organisations or delivering ‘strong Māori outcomes’. 

Sara begins with questions about Auckland central congestion.

On the proposal to scrap regional councils & the government’s request to increase developments around key CRL stations to up to 15 stories w/ Councillor Julie Fairey: 3 July, 2025

Regional Development Minister Shane Jones has suggested to the local government forum that regional councils may be abolished, stating that 
"After the upcoming changes to the Resource Management Act, I doubt that there's going to be a compelling case for regional government to continue to exist.“

Regional councils across Aotearoa are responsible for matters relating to natural resource management, flood control, and biosecurity.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said effectiveness between different councils is varied, and that councils generate too much bureaucracy and are “too focussed on vanity projects”.

As well, in order to make the most of local and central investment into Auckland’s growing city, the government is asking Auckland Council to increase the housing development allowance around key Central Rail Link stations in the lead up to the project’s completion.

Seeking to amend the resource management act, the government hopes to increase housing height and density around Mount Albert and Baldwin Avenue stations, allowing upzoning  of ten stories around these areas, in addition to allowing upzoning of fifteen stories around Maungawhau, Morningside and Kingsland.

Producer Sara spoke with Councillor Julie Fairey about both of these topics, starting with the proposal to scrap regional councils.

City Counselling w/ Pippa Coom: September 9th, 2022

The White Lady food truck has recently had it’s licence extended by twelve months by the Auckland Council. 

This came after weeks of tension, due to a complaint against the white lady being made by a store that operates nearby it. 

The store complained about rubbish being left on the street, and of drunk customers loitering nearby.

This led to The White Lady having it’s licence restricted, which saw major backlash to the council for punishing struggling local businesses.

Liam had a chat with Auckland City Councillor Pippa Coom about the licence renewal, as well as various other efforts to revitalise the city centre.
