It is no secret New Zealand has one of the highest suicide rates in the OECD and one in seven people will experience a major depressive episode in their life at some point. In these statistics men, in particular, are over-represented and for years the subject of mental health and opening up has been somewhat of a taboo subject for males. A group of university students have decided to change this. They have started a group called Mana For Men and are aiming to raise awareness around men’s mental health and encourage blokes to open up about their feelings. Sam Smith spoke to one of the founders Louis Laws.

A one and a half million dollar survey detailing the usefulness of courses when applying for work, has been blocked by universities. Critics have pointed out the data could potentially be skewed and is therefore unreliable, however when Tuwhenuaroa spoke to Brendan Kelly, Deputy Chief Executive of Information at the Tertiary Education Commision, he reassured him the data was solid. Brendan was reluctant to speculate as to why the survey had been blocked, however he did give some insight as to the process of making the survey as reliable and useful as possible. Tu started off by asking him why the survey was commissioned to begin with.
The FBI’s investigation of sexual assault allegations laid against Supreme Court Nominee Brett Kavanaugh has begun, and will continue until the end of this week. Mary-Margaret spoke to political commentator Tracey Barnett about the importance of paying attention to attacks that take place during people’s high school experiences. We do not detail assault in this story, but we do bring into question the rhetoric of victim blaming, so as a warning: to anyone who may find that language distressing - it is explicitly referenced at one point.
Recently a ‘homeless count’ was undertaken with the idea of providing a snapshot of the minimum number of people experiencing unsheltered and temporary homelessness at one point in time. It was called, Ira Mata, Ira Tangata: Auckland’s Homeless Count - the name recognises that each person embodies those who have come before them and those in the future. It reflects that a person is not defined by their homelessness and that people who are homeless are valued – they ‘count’. Funded by Auckland Council and implemented by the Housing First Auckland collective, it was the first time a street count has happened in NZ. Today is World Homeless Day and the findings of the count have been announced, Lillian Hanly takes us through those findings.
Last week Jemima spoke with Ruth Dreifuss, former President of Switzerland and current Chair of the Global Commission on Drug Policy. They discussed the Commission's most recent report, Regulation: the responsible control of drugs. The bold report points to regulation over prohibition as the best way to control drugs across the world. This interview will be aired in two parts. Part one talks about what the global drug control stance is right now, the cultural difference between alcohol and drugs and what regulation is. Thank you to the New Zealand Drug Foundation for setting up this interview.
