Pennie's back this week fighting fit and healthy with breaking news that The Perm is coming back! While educating us in the history of Hot Tongs, Pennie question's whether Mike's curly locks are natural... Are they, Mikey?
Professor Mark Costello is part of the Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of Auckland and he and his colleagues think New Zealand can lead the world in a kind of ocean management that benefits both nature and society. ...But I thought we'd ruined the oceans, Professor, ...is there still hope!?
Suri joins us today with a read that's perhaps not so loose (sorry). Beth Macy's Dopesick, tackles the ongoing opioid crisis in America, with heartbreaking stories of addicts and alike. A book that despite it's heartbreaking nature, is a must-read and needs to be heard; the expert says.
What if we could change genetics to make people run faster? Or become less violent? Woah, but is this even ethical? Luckily, Professor of Philosophy, Tim Dare, joins Tess and Sarah in studio to answer all their many questions about this strange reality we're facing. Science fiction or real-life? Head to LATE 2018: CRISPR - Utopian or Dystopian? Post-nature at the museum to find out.
On Fancy New Band this week, Saxobros join us in studio to perform 2 covers: Not Many/Nature and Slice of Heaven. We chat about everything saxophones... and that's pretty much it. You might have to listen to the full podcast to hear what else we talk about, and also Sean's sick intro rap! Thank you so so much NZ On Air Music! ~ ~ ~
For this week's Green Desk, Mitchell spoke to Hinewai Reserve Manager Hugh Wilson about the Hinewai Reserve, a regenerating area of native forest on the Banks Peninsula.
They discuss its carbon credit system which has become increasingly popular with large businesses allowing them to offset unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions.
The system has allowed the reserve to expand and encompass a significant area on the peninsula which has rejuvenated naturally without planting and minimal pest control. Mitchell begins by asking Wilson a little bit about the history of the Reserve and how its arrived at where it is today.
Deerhunter released a new album today and Lockett dials in to have a nice lil' chat with Mikey about it. Why Hasn't Everything Already Disappeared?, concerns the disappearance of culture, of humanity, of nature, of logic and of emotion. Lockett descibes the process behind this album, the longetivity of the band and even the band's forecast for the next two years. Featuring the title track, Death In Midsummer, this album is definitely worth a long listen.
After feeling a little bit sad after last weeks topic, Rob's brought up a nice one today. Talking about spending time in nature and the evidence of how it can benefit us, Rob reckons it's time to get amongst the forests.
