Cocktail Corner: w/ Stephen and Cointreau: November 15, 2018

Cointreau and flavoured Margarita's are on the menu. Stephen from Hancocks visits the bFM studio with a huge selection of Master of Mixes premium cocktail mixes. He also has a jar of Roses sweet orange marmalade, to demonstrate how easy it is to make a delicious cocktail with jam. 

Mango Margarita 

In a boston shaker add:

45ml x Herradura Tequila

20ml x Cointreau

90ml x Mango Nectar (Master of Mixes)

20ml x Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice 

Add ice & shake.

Strain into a chilled coupe. Rim with salt if desired. 

Marmalade Jam Margarita

In a boston shaker add:

45ml x Herradura Tequila

30ml x Cointreau

2 x spoons of Roses Orange Marmalade

25ml x Freshly squeezed lime juice

Add ice and shake. 

Strain in a chilled coupe. Rim with salt if desired. 

YUM! Both are delicious!

Lillian starts the show by acknowledging the passing of Te Wharehuia Milroy. 

For Dear Science we talk about the 1 million species nearly extinct due to human actions, the T-Rex's cousin and mind altering drugs from 1000 years ago.

Lillian touches on the two big announcements made by the government today on the Zero Carbon Bill and the 6 principles which will guide the government in responding to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into historical abuse in state care and in the care of faith-based institutions.

Sherry gives us Part 1 of a report on her visit to the largest landfill in South-East Asia, Bantar Gebang.

Tania Sawicki-Mead from Just Speak tells us about their event next week where they hope to get everyday people talking about transformational change in the justice system.

Bantar Gebang report: May 8th, 2019

Sherry Zhang visited Indonesia  and reports on Bantar Gebang: South East Asia's largest landfill and home to 3000 famillies. She interviews Resa Boenard: the founder of the kingdom of BGBJ, an NGO to support the women and children living on the landfill with life skills and education:

This week Sherry focused on the workers at Banter Gebang, and the pressure they face in a dangerous environment. 

Next week will be on the children, family and women who live on the landfill and Resa shares her hopes for the educational suuport she hopes to set up for the children of BGBJ. 

Following that, Sherry will be looking at the waste management process in Indonesia, as an environmental concern but also as a source livelihood for these people.

Finally, New Zealand exports 13,800 tonnes of our plastic to Indonesia. So what does it mean when New Zealand sell their plastic to developing nations, to maintain the clean green image?

Sherry continues her report on Banter Gebang, South East Asia’s largest landfill and home to 3,000 families. She visit the landfill as part of her journalism placement in Indonesia, Jakarta over the summer. This week, she talks to Resa Boenard, the founder of BGBJ, the school on Bantar Gebang. Ibu Rastinah, one of the women who work at the plastic sorting companies on the landfill, and the children of the class she helped out with.

Homeless art exhibition w/ Clare Caldwell: May 29th, 2019

‘This is where I live’ is an art exhibition opening tonight at Merge Cafe on K rd. The project is an international exchange of art created by people who have experienced homelessness. Sherry talks with the curator Clare Caldwell on the exchange of Art from different cities, the importance of showing the perspective of our Homeless community, the paradigm shifts she hopes in our dialogues around supporting them and the role of visual art.

Sherry Begins by asking Clare how she is feeling with the opening of the exhibition.

The exhibition opens tonight, Wednesday the 29th of May from 5 to 7 If anyone would like to visit the artworks, at Lifewise merge cafe on Krd. This will be running will the twelth of June, and the cafe is open from 7am to 2pm.

Ramadan, a reflection: June 5, 2019

Last week Lillian was invited to her first iftar dinner by the owners of the Turkish cafe in Grey Lynn she visits weekly, Coffee & Durum. Hassan and Darya opened the cafe in 2016 and have since hosted public iftar dinners three years running. This year, after the terror attacks in Christchurch, there was an added layer of connection. Lillian talks to some of the other regulars who attended the dinner and explores the open-hearted kaupapa through which Hassan and Darya run the cafe.
