Weekly Catchup w/ The Green Party’s Ricardo Menendez-March: 11 June, 2025

The Green party recently made renewed calls to the government to sanction Israel for its illegal occupation of Palestine following the seizure of the Madleen, a vessel that aimed to deliver food and medical aid to Gaza.

The vessel, which was en route to Gaza, was intercepted in the Mediterranean by the Israeli Defence Forces before being rerouted to Israel with all those on board, among whom was Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Immigration Minister Erica Stanford recently announced the Parent Boost Visa, part of the government’s self-described commitment to supporting parents living overseas to visit and stay with their families here in Aotearoa.

And, over in the United States, 2000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines have been deployed to Los Angeles in response to protests opposing the city’s recent immigration raids.

Helen Clark’s comments on the Gaza ‘genocide’, the recent Taxpayers Union-Curia poll, and Electorate Changes w/ Labour’s Shanan Halbert: 14 August, 2025

Former Prime Minister Helen Clark recently visited the border of Gaza with Egypt. She told media there was “no reason” why Aotearoa New Zealand shouldn’t take the step to recognise a Palestinian state.

The latest Taxpayers Union-Curia poll has predicted a hung parliament next election. Labour has overtaken National, with both National leader Christopher Luxon and Labour Leader Chris Hipkins up in the preferred Prime Minister poll.

And the independent “Representation Commission” has announced the changes to electorates in time for the next generation election. While the changes focus on adjusting boundaries, the electorate of “Rongotai” was also renamed to “Wellington Bays.”

For our weekly catch-up with the Labour Party, Wire Host Caeden spoke to Shanan Halbert about all of these issues.

Dialogues in Video Art w/ Assistant Curator Audrey Goggin: 19th September, 2025

Dialogues in Video Art showing at George Fraser gallery, is an exhibition that brings together video works from the Chartwell collection, one of Aotearoa's most significant collections of contemporary art, along with video works from current students and recent graduates of Elam School of Fine Arts.

Curated by visiting scholar US art historian and curator Alex Bacon, alongside assistant curator and current Elam student Audrey Goggin. Coming together to showcase the works of Elam students, and alumni along with the rich collection of moving image works from the Chartwell collection. A Collection that spans nearly 20 years of work from established Aotearoa and Australian artists.

Dialogues in Video Art brings these works together in space to create this really beautiful, interconnected conversation between works. Speaking to themes of embodiment, duration and the natural world. Continuing this generative circulation of video art, and the dialogues that surround them.

Under the Bridge w/ Eva During (Eva Ding): 31st October, 2025

Eva During is a multidisciplinary artist, and recipient of the arts house trust and Dunedin School of Art graduate exhibition scholarship 2025. Eva works within spaces of sculpture, ceramics, audio and installation, in which she navigates the complexities of personal identity through her experience as a first-generation immigrant. 

Her current exhibition at the Arts House Trust at Pah Homestead, Under the Bridge, follows Eva’s journey as she retraces the path of Aotearoa’s first Chinese immigrants. Visiting these historic sites of the goldmining settlements of Lawrence and Arrowtown, through tracing the path of the Clutha river. 

Throughout the journey, Eva collected these organic materials of the land's temporal memory, bringing them back into the studio in which the organic materials were transferred onto pieces of material that Eva then hand stitched into 100s of shā bāo that form a river bed along the gallery floor.

Bringing together a beautiful display of collective memory and dialogue that speaks to the quiet strength that is passed down through generations of Chinese immigrants.

Wā Dividends w/ Heidi Brickell: 21st November, 2025

Heidi Brickell (Te Hika o Pāpāuma, Ngāti Kahungunu ki Tāmaki-nui-ā-Rua, Rongomaiwahine, Rangitāne, Ngāi Tara, Ngāti Apakura, Airihi, Kōtimana, Ingarangi, Tiamana) is an Ōtaki-based multidisciplinary artist. 

Her current solo exhibition at the Arts House Trust at Pah Homestead, Wā Dividends, takes pieces from its larger body, which was originally commissioned by Director Sophie Davis at Te Whare Toi o Heretaunga | Hastings Art Gallery for the exhibition, Wā We Can’t Afford, having been developed in a six-week residency in Heretaunga as the gallery’s inaugural visiting artist. 

Bringing this body of work into a new space and context, and retitled as Wā Dividends, here Brickell places these fluent ‘exploded paintings’ in conversation with rimurapa (native bull kelp) sculptural pieces as gathered from the shores of Ōtaki and Te Raekaihau in one space – questioning the value of our time in relation to matauranga Māori, capitalism, and our worsening climate crisis; opening up her practice to fluctuate between the spiritual, relational, and existential. 

Sofia caught up with Heidi Brickell about Wā Dividends, beginning their kōrero by asking Heidi about the origins of this body of work and her experience during her artist residency in Heretaunga at the end of last year.

We discuss what effective contribution is, how we can make sure local body politicians are doing their jobs as well as a swift update on what is happening in the Whau. Tune in to find out more. 

Gautami spoke to Dr Campbell Jones , a researcher from Economic and Social Research Aotearoa and who is also a Professor of Sociology here at the University of Auckland. He talked about the state of housing in New Zealand and the initiatives young people can take to get into the property market.

 

We are also joined by Radio Adelaide's Zoe Kounadis to discuss the week in Australian News. This week we discuss the yet again proposed closure of Uluru to climbers, as well as the Raise the Rate campaign looking to raise benefits and reform the Australian Newstart system.  

And finally, Andrew Little joins us again this week just as he is about to step aboard an aeroplane. Lillian Hanly speaks to him about the Crime Fund, Drones and road safety changes. Minister Little is however heading to Whangarei tomorrow to visit the District Court, so Lillian starts by asking what such a visit involves.
