A recent Salient survey revealed that 75% of students at Victoria University of Wellington felt unsafe while on a night out in the Wellington CBD. 

This figure comes amidst a nationwide statistical increase in violence, with figures from 2023/24 showing increases in murder and manslaughter offences at rates of up to 77% compared to the year before. 

As such, a petition was launched on Our Action Station by Victoria African Diapsora Student Association, also known as VASDA, calling on the Wellington City Council to create and fund a wide-scale cross-community project aimed at addressing violence in the CBD and improving the safety of Rangatahi. 

The petition was also launched in wake of the murder of Luke Smith, a 21 year old student who was killed in Wellington’s Courtney place. 

Oto spoke to Rachel Jaboon, the outgoing president of VASDA, to discuss the petition and her organisation’s calls to the Wellington City Council to improve the safety of Rangatahi in Wellington's CBD.

Ever wondered what it would be like to bike in an Art Gallery? Well now you can, for the city is your gallery. In collaboration with EcoFest 2025 and various New Zealand artists, Bike Hubs have set up a Street Art Bike Challenge. Now, anyone can ride around the city, discover amazing works of art and win great prizes. 

This week, Green Desk Producer Liam speaks to Brent Bielby, manager of EcoMatters’ Bike Hubs, a community project aimed at encouraging more people to take up cycling. He explains the goal behind the challenge, as well as how cycling can contribute to a healthy lifestyle and provide a source of freedom and fun.  

You can take part in this challenge yourself. All you need to do is take out your bike, pedal over to the artworks, and upload a photo of you and your bike. The challenge will run until the 22nd of April, and you can find a map of all the locations and trails on the EcoMatters website.

Earlier this week, Wayne Brown shared an opinion piece offering a case for council amalgamation.

He discusses his experience in the Upper North Island Strategic Alliance, stating that discussions on local issues can be inefficient because of the number of members, and arguing that some sort of council amalgamation would be more beneficial in terms of efficiency, and providing better representation for New-Zealanders in this region.

As well, ahead of this year’s local elections, Auckland Council has posted an advertisement on LinkedIn for “passionate Aucklanders” to throw their hat in the ring for an Auckland Council position. They have said they are hoping to draw in a ‘diverse range of community leaders’ to help represent Auckland within local governance.

Numerous political figures including Ministers Shane Jones and David Seymour have spoken out in the media this week with allegations that Auckland Council is trying to usher in ‘co-governance’ on a local level, with their proposal on the management of the Waitākere Ranges.

CEO of Te Kawerau ā Maki Edward Ashby called out the political lashback as “fear-mongering” and ‘misinformation’, affirming that the proposal is not actually a co-governance structure. 

The proposal is for a decision-making committee of 50% representation from the Crown and tangata whenua to manage the land under a deed of acknowledgement.

The council says the deed of acknowledgement is in line with the Waitākere Ranges Heritage Act 2008, and follows on from the existing management structures in place.
