23 MPs made the news last weekend for using their accommodation supplement to rent back their own homes. The accommodation supplement is an entitlement for out-of-Wellington-based MPs to have the place they stay when in Wellington covered under their employment. In some cases MPs used the supplement to pay off the mortgage of a second or third home.

Other recent political news includes the opposition to the proposed fast track legislation, and criticism of how the recently announced budget will negatively impact already marginalised groups. Caeden chat about all these topics with Labour’s Arena Williams for our weekly catch-up with the Labour Party.

They started by asking if she thinks it’s ok for MP’s to be enabled to become multiple homeowners as a result of the supplement they claim?

Having it All, All, All is a new group exhibition at Gus Fisher Gallery composed of nine international artists whose work has been pivotal in the reimagination of female subjectivity in art.

The exhibition is showing select video and performance art by the likes of Ana Mendieta (Cuba/USA), Yoko Ono (Japan/USA), Howardena Pindell (USA), Pipilotti Rist (Switzerland), Martha Rosler (USA), Christa Schadt (Canada), Janice Tanaka (USA), Hannah Wilke (USA), and Nil Yalter (Turkey/France). 

Spanning the 1960s to 1990s, Having it All, All, All delves into the activism and identity politics associated with Second Wave Feminism and its critics.

Sofia spoke to curator of contemporary art at Gus Fisher Gallery, Lisa Beauchamp, about the exhibition, her curation process, and the impact of these works on feminist politics as seen through a contemporary perspective.

Parliament’s Justice Committee recently released a report into the ACT Party’s Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Bill.

With 90% of the bill’s 300,000 submissions being opposed to it, the select committee’s 45-page report recommended that the treaty principles bill should not proceed, with National and NZ first both committed to voting it down in its upcoming second reading.

Concrete is Ruth Cleland’s second solo exhibition of new and previously unexhibited works, currently on at Sumer Gallery.

Cleland is known for her photorealistic depictions of everyday subjects and scenes, with this exhibition exploring concrete flooring in locations and sites she regularly encounters. The works are more than representations of concrete, but a collection representative of equanimity, eliciting a state of quietude within the viewer.

This body of work shows a subtle but significant development in Cleland’s practice, whereby more emphasis has been placed on the interrelationship between her gridded paintings and photorealistic concrete floor depictions, and how they respond to one another. As in previous works, this exhibition continues Cleland’s ‘sustained inquiry into image and grid—of subject, time, and value—as she traverses the hyperreal and abstract.’
