Revitalising St James Theatre w/ Steve Bielby and Chlöe Swarbrick: August 15, 2022

New video footage of the interior of the vandalised St James Theatre has been released by Auckland Central MP Chlöe Swarbrick, showing fungi growing on damp floors, damaged electrical fittings and roof, as well as an exposure to the weather and rain, and foundation-eroding dampness.

Swarbrick has written an open letter calling for the government to match the Auckland Council's $15 million commitment to restoring the building. She says this decision can't be kicked down the road any more and that the revival of the theatre will secure Queen Streets' status as a buzzing destination that will provide space and a place for Auckland's creative community.

Built in 1928, St James Theatre once hosted many shows and concerts. St James Theatre is also regarded as a Category 1 Heritage building, meaning it is a historic places are of special or outstanding historical or cultural significance or value. 

However, Building owner Steve Bielby says thieves and vandals had 'gutted' the once historic site.

Joe spoke to the owner of St James Theatre, Steve Bielby as well as Green Party MP for Auckland Central Chlöe Swarbrick, about why the revitalisation of St James Theatre is so significant to Auckland.

Trademark dispute between US Singer Katy Perry and Australian Designer Katie Perry w/Associate Professor in the University of Auckland Law Faculty, Rob Batty: 3rd December, 2024

American singer, Katy Perry, recently had a court win in a long-running trademark dispute with Australian fashion designer, Katie Perry. The singer successfully appealed a 2023 Federal Court decision, resulting in the fashion designer having her trademark cancelled, and being ordered to pay costs.

Producer Athena spoke to Associate Professor at the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Law, Rob Batty, about what gave rise to the case, how trademark law was applied, and what the recent decision might mean for smaller names.

Changes to open-plan classrooms w/ the New Zealand Principals’ Federation’s Blair Dravitski: 24 July, 2025

Last week, Education Minister, Erica Stanford, announced that the construction of open-plan classrooms would be halted.

The National Party had previously petitioned for the classroom design in 2011, with the idea of pushing for flexibility in the way students were taught, and to accommodate a shift in how technology is used in educational spaces.

However, the classroom design has received a mixture of responses. 

Some say the classroom design resulted in a noisy and distracting environment.  Despite this,  surveys by the Council for Educational Research showed that most teachers liked open-plan classrooms, adding that students benefitted from the classroom design.

News and Editorial Director, Joel, spoke to Blair Dravitski about the government’s move regarding open-plan classrooms.

Dravitski is a spokesperson on the topic for the New Zealand Principals’ Federation, and Tumuaki/Principal of Te Uru Tarata | Lemonwood Grove School in Rolleston.

Platform for Palestine is an online raffle fundraiser with local artists, designers, jewellers and tattoo artists in Tāmaki Makaurau.  

It has brought together artists - including Claudia Kogachi, Sung Hwan Bobby Park, and Taarn Scott, tattooists - including Thom Hinton, Barby World, and Cyril, jewellers - including Shannen Young, PL.AT.FO.RM._, and Wilbur Hsu, and designers - including Lela Jacobs, Goldi, and Outerlines. As well as many more. 

The fundraiser will be launched online and at The Keep, 504 Karangahape Road, tomorrow and will run until the 31st October. 

All ticket sales will be donated to Kiwi Trust for Palestinian Children Relief, to provide urgent aid to children in Gaza.
