Today we had the privilige of being joined by City Vision Waitematā Local Board candidates Graeme Gunthorp and Alexandra Bonham. We discuss what the roles they are trying for mean to them as well as their general thoughts on a few intricacies of local government.
New Zealand has declined its's invitation to join US President Donald Trump's Board of Peace after saying it will give due consideration to the invitation. The Co-Convenor of human rights group Justice for Palestine, Samira Zaitoon, has welcomed the move, but has expressed concern over the government's wording around declining the invitation.
She also talks about what the Board of Peace means for traditional global bodies like the UN, and what New Zealand can do in terms of policy-making on the issue.
This week, the government announced a comprehensive change to Aotearoa's healthcare structure. The 20 District Health Boards around the country will be scrapped and replaced with a centralised national system. Noah Ferguson-Dudding spoke to National MP Christopher Luxon whose party has come out strongly against the proposal. They also discussed the government's recent deal with Fletcher Buildings over tapu land at Ihumātao.
Eight local boards from central Auckland voted on the issue of special character areas in Auckland, contributing to a longstanding debate around housing intensification and preserving Auckland’s inner-city suburbs.
For the our regular city counselling segment Casper spoke to Auckland city counsellor Shane Henderson to get a sense of what happened in this debate, what the vote means and how it might affect the future of housing in Auckland.
Last week the Tāmaki Makaurau local elections concluded, seeing an overall shift to the centre right exemplified by the landslide win of Wayne Brown.
This was largely due to an overrepresentation of older, upper-class people in the vote, a symptom of incredibly low voter turnouts across the board.

They have called for more investment in peer support as a way of giving our mental health and addiction recovery sectors the boost they need.
