Hybrid Work and Calls from PM Christopher Luxon to get Public Service Workers Back to the Office w/ Senior Lecturer at the School of Management at the Victoria University of Wellington, Stephen Blumenfeld: 30 September, 2024

Recently, the government has announced a push to get public services working back into working in the office, as opposed to current, alternative methods, such as through working-at-home models, and hybrid working models.

This comes as multiple academics from the Victoria University of Wellington are set to release an article in the New Zealand Journal of Employment Relations, discussing the positive findings of a hybrid working model.

Further findings in the past have proven claims that a hybrid working model improves productivity, such as a 2023 study from Human Resources New Zealand, which has shown 40% of HR professionals noted positive productivity gains from a hybrid working model.

I spoke to the Senior Lecturer at the School of Management at the Victoria University of Wellington, and co-author of the article, Stephen Blumenfeld, about the government’s calls to get public services workers back to the office, and the findings from the article.

Concerns around Tax Model Around Charities Operating as Businesses w/ AUT’s Ranjana Gupta: 24 February, 2025

Concerns have been raised regarding Aotearoa’s tax model, regarding charities also operating as businesses.

Despite the current model requiring all profit obtained through a charity's business not be used for personal gain, this is a little bit of a grey area.

For example, any profit from weet-bix cereal products is tax exempt, due to Sanitarium Health Food Company being owned by the Seventh-day Adventist Church, which results in the company having an advantage over their competitors.

However, with the 2025 Budget set to be released later this year, changes may be made to this system.

News and Editorial Director and Monday Wire Host, Joel, spoke to a Senior Lecturer in the Accounting Department at AUT, Ranjana Gupta, about this tax model, and what she hopes will come out of the 2025 Budget regarding this.

They started off by asking her about what purpose a charity may have to run a business as well.

Meet The Candidates w/ Maya Templer: September 8, 2023

With the 2023 general election on the horizon, Ōtautahi illustrator and designer Maya Templer has put together a set of Magic the Gathering-esque trading cards comparing and contrasting the candidates. 

The game has 45 cards of MP’s running in the upcoming election, alongside policy cards and a few tributes to Aotearoa’s political history. 

The game can indeed be played like a classic trading card game, but is still meant to be informational in an effort to help upcoming voters learn more about who they’ll be electing. 

Liam had a chat with Maya about the card game, and how it came together.

New Game called Sooth: August 29, 2018

Andra, founding member, and Nik, co-creator, of a game called Sooth, joined Lillian Hanly in studio this week. They are part of a group of people who came together to do prototypes, artwork, and testing in order to get this game ready for commercial use. What is this game you say? Essentially it’s a question game with yes or no answers. The rules are very loose and you can really make the game whatever you want it to be, whether it is serious or just fun. Some of the questions go like this, Do you tolerate intolerance? Do you go by the name your parents gave you? Are you famous enough to be in the news when you’re arrested for intoxication? Is a headmaster more important than a politician? Anyway. The best way of understanding the game is to play it. So Lillian started by asking Nik and Andra how this all began and then got some fellow bFMers in the studio to play the game…
