This week's show featured faves from Mysticwood & Mezcal, Benefits, Saint Etienne, Munk & Kapote, Daniel Monaco Band and what I think was a well-timed Primal Scream critique of US imperialism - pretty much airing at the same time ex-The Wire host Chlöe Swarbrick was calling out the government's spineless approach to the genocide we see happening in Gaza every damn day.
Rāmere drive featured Pōneke 4-piece post-punk outfit Half/Angel playing for Friday live, playing their newest E.P - Boat Ramp + Jitterbug, and witty banter from today's drive host - Oto.
This was a special show for me, my last with top dawg Aneeka Moheed as my boss. Still coming back down to earth after last week's stellar performances by Exploding Rainbow Orchestra, I aired a bunch of faves I'd selected for my sets as their welcome deej. I also asked ace selector Aneeka to play a couple tunes toward the end of the show. Of course, she only picks the best!
This week the Swap Meet opened with recent gear from Benny Sings, Larry June, Moonchild, Mike, DoomCannon, Jenevieve among others. We tipped the hat to Bob Power, the legendary engineer who passed this week, so we marked the occasion with ATCQ and Roots tunes that set the bar. If you don't know what Bob Power did for hip-hop and soul read the internet until you do.
From there things got loose in the best way: rare soul, boogie, Gary Clail/On-U, Millie Jackson talking about her fireplace, afrobeat cuts, hip-house, and a stretch of late-night Philly and Detroit flavours via Vikter Duplaix and Wajeed. Laura Nyro supplied the dollar bin jam from her Golden Jubilee minted record "Smile", Gladys Knight, and Kurt Elling with the WDR Big Band sending everyone home feeling like they'd been somewhere worth going. Good show. Glad you're listening back - big up yourself.
