The Pūrākau of Hatupatu and Kurungaituku is the story of a young warrior who is captured by a part-woman, part bird creature named Kurungaituku.

Artistic Director and Writer Tānemahuta Gray provides a humanistic and romantic portrayal of the Pūrākau that delves into the nuances of the pair's relationship.

With a performance design influenced by the aerial style of De La Guarda; Hatupatu | Kurungaituku: A Forbidden Love provides an immersive experience for attendees.

Nicholas spoke to Artistic Director and Writer Tānemahuta Gray about the Pūrākau behind the show as well as the shows De La Guarda inspiration.

Chris Riddell is a world-renowned illustrator and author of children’s books and the political cartoonist for the Observer newspaper. He has collaborated with artists and writers such as Neil Gaiman, Phoebe Bridgers and Frances Hardinge. In 2018 he travelled to Aotearoa to speak at the Auckland Writers Festival. Most recently, Chris has released I Can’t Remember What We Talked About, a slim volume of 24 poems.

Beth and Chris chat about the creative process of art-making and poetry writing, love of nature, designing pop-up books for the backdrop of Phoebe Bridgers’ tour and magical pear tree staffs. Chris reads some poems and they also speak about what it’s like being a political cartoonist in the current political climate.

The government has announced that it will introduce legislation for a four year parliamentary term - subject to referendum. 

Most parties are largely in favour of a four year term - feeling that it gives more opportunity to develop policy and make changes. 

As part of their coalition deal, the ACT party designed a caveat to be included in the legislation that would put more ‘checks and balances’ on the government. 

This essentially means the opposition would have more powers in select committees. If this legislation is passed and voted on, a four year government term would not be mandatory - but would instead be decided after the government was elected. 

For our weekly catch up with the ACT Party, Producer Evie spoke to Simon Court about the legislation and why the party supports a four year term. 

They also talked about the government giving retailers and members of the public more power to detain shoplifters under legislative reforms. Otherwise known as citizens' arrests.

Finance Minister Nicola Willis and Energy Minister Simon Watts have announced a package of measures designed to improve the affordability of electricity in New Zealand through “new projects” and gas exploration, with little details to offer on timeline or cost. 

Employees & Manufacturers Association have called the announcement “underwhelming”, and the Major Electricity Users' Group says there is no evidence the plan will make a difference to affordability in the next decade.

As well, last week three New Zealanders were among hundreds of activists detained from the Freedom Flotilla, seeking to get humanitarian aid into Gaza. 

The activists will be deported on Wednesday from Israel to Jordan, but calls have been renewed for the New Zealand government to step up on its commitments to responding to the situation in Gaza.
