Hiria Anderson-Mita (Rereahu, Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Apakura) is an Ōtorohanga-based painter whose practice depicts the everyday lives of the people of her community – often portraying landscapes or these tender, intimate moments in domestic and communal environments, but also the political and social environment of today that shapes contemporary Māori life.

In her current solo exhibition, PĀ - Te Huarahi ki te Kāinga - Finding My Way Home, on at Tim Melville Gallery, each painting locates and portrays a site of history and connection within the rohe of Ōtewa, Rangitoto Tuhua and the surrounding pā of Ngāti Maniapoto and Rereahu. Tracing the footprints of her tūpuna, Anderson-Mita’s inquiry sees her painting the pā tuna, the kohatu, the maunga, and the awa that were once sources of sustenance for entire communities – bringing these subjects into light as an avenue to share her knowledge of this area with others.

Last week, Climate Minister Simon Watts announced numerous changes to New Zealand’s Climate Change Response Act, including removing the requirement for Climate Change Commission advice on emissions reductions plans, and easing requirements around public consultation on government targets.

Wire Host Sara spoke with MP Carl Bates about all of these topics, she started by asking about the government’s motivation for changing the consultation requirements within the Climate Change Response Act

A large part of the focus in New Zealand over the last week or so has been on fuel prices. As conflict and strikes continue in the wake of the US and Israel’s moves on Iran, the ramifications of restricted movement through the strait of Hormuz has been felt globally, and New Zealand is no different. Rising fuel prices have rapidly put pressure on New Zealand households already struggling with cost of living, leading to a tense economic situation. While the government is looking to provide what they call ‘targeted’ assistance, there remains uncertainty around how they will support New Zealanders through a potential fuel crisis.

This week, Tuesday Wire Host Alex spoke with National Party MP Ryan Hamilton about this assistance, as well as the wider context of fuel woes and Iran, and the cost of living crisis.

Currently, the Auckland Art Gallery is housing a free exhibition of more than 120 portraits by artist Gottfried Lindauer, whose paintings feature prominent New Zealand historical figures and rangatira from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lindauer’s portraits reveal a long history of engagement with protagonists from New Zealand’s past.
