It is estimated that 50 million people worldwide are currently involved in some form of slavery. Many of those who have been enslaved for their labour, and work as child labourers, produce goods that we import and consume on a regular basis here in Aotearoa.
Currently, there is no existing legislation in Aotearoa that requires companies to disclose the source of their goods, or to ensure that their products are being ethically produced; giving them free rein to indulge in modern slavery in order to cut their production costs.
Producer Oto spoke to Dr Susan Maiava, Co-Founder of the ethical directory Fair & Good who have created a petition and open letter urging the government to introduce modern slavery legislation.
Modern Women: Flight of Time is a new major show at Toi o Tāmaki Auckland Art Gallery.
Combining over 80 paintings, prints, sculptures and textiles from public and private collections across Aotearoa from 1920 to 1970, the exhibition highlights the leading role women artists have played in shaping the development of modern art.
Including iconic figures such as Rita Angus, Frances Hodgkins, and A Lois White, the exhibition also aims to celebrate the significant contributions of lesser known women artists such as June Black, Flora Scales and Pauline Yearbury.
The exhibition has been curated by Auckland Art Gallery Curator of New Zealand Art Julia Waite.
Sofia spoke to Julia about the show, her curation process, and how the exhibition uncovers themes of women’s artistic practices in the 20th century.

Fuck off Fascism Week continues on the Wire: every day this week we’ll be talking to academics, activists and other insightful voices about the concept of fascism and its return to the global political conversation. Today, Wire Producer Harry looks into just what constitutes a fascist state, what exactly makes a modern day fascist, and talks with Giacomo Lichtner from Victoria University about fascism in today's political climate.
In Hour 1 we welcome Voyage label boss Andy Hart following the release of his Voyager 1 EP. He told us; "This is the first record I’ve put out in a quite some time as I’ve mainly been focusing on djing and developing the label. We’ve just finished a tour of Europe with Wax’o Paradiso, a party and group I’m involved in from Melbourne. I’m also heading on a solo tour to Asia and Australia in November, although there is a gig in Osaka at the end of this month as well as the usual Wax’o Paradiso gigs in Australia over summer. The mix is somewhat reflective of the upcoming Voyage EP we’re doing with Rings Around Saturn. He’s an incredible talent and one of the most interesting artists that has come out of Melbourne; check his aliases and collaborations sd Dan White, 2200, Bleekman and Turner Street Sound. Although he makes music across a broad spectrum, this EP is quite reserved and delicate, which are qualities I’ve tried to focus on whilst putting together records for this mix. There are some more recent bits in from Skee Mask, Lord Of The Isles and S.O.N.S as well as a track from Move D and Benjamin Brunn’s 2006 LP for BineMusic. In Hour 2 we hand over to Rafael Anton Irisarri for his Solid Steel Ambient mix to celebrate the release of his new cassette on Umour Rex called El Ferrocarril Desvaneciente. While composed as an ode to an overnight train journey through Spain he took many years ago, the music picks up sonically where his
previous album Sirimiri left off. Irisarri focuses on deploying sonic cycles throughout these four shorter pieces, basing much of this sweeping ambience around looped sounds and distant pulses. The sound is however kept in a state of forward motion and constant evolution, invoking the slowly rumbling night train that inspired it —not to mention its cargo of misfits and travelers. Inspired by musical storytellers such as Lee Hazelwood, Lou Reed, or Leonard Cohen, his music is transforming into something closer to narrative ––“storytelling without words,” He said this about his mix "Ambient mix featuring dear friends. Enjoy!"
In Hour 1 we welcome Bambounou, a key figure in the Parisian scene, has gained his position from his genre bending and jubilant electronic music productions and laying down solid freight train DJ sets around the globe. His effortless straddling of experimental eclecticism and 4x4 beat mastery helped Bambounou to early on catch the eye of Modeselektor, whose 50Weapons released two albums and five EPs of his axiom breaking dance incantations. His last EP 'Parametr Perkusja' came out on Disk and he had this to say;
"Hey everyone, this is a mix I did in my studio in Paris, I put up some tracks that I like playing and listening to at the moment, I hope you are going to enjoy it, now i’m about to hit the gym and have a big breakfast after that cause I need the carbs (i’m already working on my summer body and its october !!! In Hour 2 it's Puce Mary the solo moniker of Copenhagen based sound artist Frederikke Hoffmeier. Since her first LP released in 2013, the project has then explored the fields of industrial noise and experimental music with a vast amount of releases on labels as Posh Isolation, iDEAL Recordings, Ascetic House and Freak Animal. Her latest release ' The Drought' has just been released on PAN and she had this to say about her mix;
"I'm very pleased to get to share this personal mix on Solid Steel. It consists of music made by friends I admire and have all influenced each other, my music and my life. New, old and a lot of unreleased material from Europe, China, Japan, USA and largely - the experimental music community I come from in Copenhagen."
