Judy Millar and Kate Newby at Michael Lett Gallery w/ Judy Millar and Kate Newby: 16th May, 2025

Selected works by Judy Millar and Kate Newby are currently showing at Michael Lett Gallery. 

Judy Millar is an internationally acclaimed artist. Her work is intensely physical, working with processes of erasure, wiping or scraping paint off the surface of the work and contrasting choices of colour to create a tension between the background and foreground. Taking up space, works by Millar are often large-scale, engaging with the body and her work in a space.

Kate Newby is a visual artist from Tāmaki Makaurau who lives and works in Floresville, Texas. Her work engages with a wide range of situations using every-day actions and materials in order to displace and challenge how contemporary art is exhibited, viewed, and archived. She manipulates, fires, and arranges elements from the natural world and built environment, creating site-responsive installations, often with projects drawing directly from the locations in which they are exhibited and the sites she works in. 

Sofia caught up with both Judy and Kate about their practices in light of the show.

Weekly Catchup w/ The Green Party’s Ricardo Menendez-March: 4 June, 2025

Last week the government announced a series of changes to 16 national direction instruments under the Resource Management Act that would change the way councils implement local plans and rules.

Minister Responsible for RMA Reform, Chris Bishop, described the changes as removing ‘unnecessary regulations’ for primary industries and investment, with the main changes being: removing freshwater management regulations for councils, removing regulations for the construction of mines and quarries and removing restrictions on non-intensive grazing of beef, cattle and deer in wetlands.

In that same week, Associate Education Minister, David Seymour made a series of changes to the pay parity scheme impacting primary school teachers, where education centres would not need to factor additional and higher qualifications when working out teacher’s starting salaries.

And, just recently, Workplace Relations and Safety minister Brooke van Velden recently announced that she’d be making a series of changes to WorkSafe in order to shift regulators priorities from enforcement to advice.

For our weekly catchup with the Green Party, Oto spoke to MP Ricardo Menendez March to get the party’s take on all of these issues.

On the proposal to scrap regional councils & the government’s request to increase developments around key CRL stations to up to 15 stories w/ Councillor Julie Fairey: 3 July, 2025

Regional Development Minister Shane Jones has suggested to the local government forum that regional councils may be abolished, stating that 
"After the upcoming changes to the Resource Management Act, I doubt that there's going to be a compelling case for regional government to continue to exist.“

Regional councils across Aotearoa are responsible for matters relating to natural resource management, flood control, and biosecurity.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said effectiveness between different councils is varied, and that councils generate too much bureaucracy and are “too focussed on vanity projects”.

As well, in order to make the most of local and central investment into Auckland’s growing city, the government is asking Auckland Council to increase the housing development allowance around key Central Rail Link stations in the lead up to the project’s completion.

Seeking to amend the resource management act, the government hopes to increase housing height and density around Mount Albert and Baldwin Avenue stations, allowing upzoning  of ten stories around these areas, in addition to allowing upzoning of fifteen stories around Maungawhau, Morningside and Kingsland.

Producer Sara spoke with Councillor Julie Fairey about both of these topics, starting with the proposal to scrap regional councils.

Electricity Plan, Defence Industry Strategy & Freedom Flotilla activists w/ National MP Carl Bates: 7 October, 2025

Finance Minister Nicola Willis and Energy Minister Simon Watts have announced a package of measures designed to improve the affordability of electricity in New Zealand through “new projects” and gas exploration, with little details to offer on timeline or cost. 

Employees & Manufacturers Association have called the announcement “underwhelming”, and the Major Electricity Users' Group says there is no evidence the plan will make a difference to affordability in the next decade. 
 
Defence Minister Judith Collins has announced a Defence Industry Strategy that will see further investment in order to develop advanced tech and lethal weapons for export from New Zealand. 

She says the plan will boost New Zealand’s military strength and support our local weapons and tech industries

As well, last week three New Zealanders were among hundreds of activists detained from the Freedom Flotilla, seeking to get humanitarian aid into Gaza. 

The activists will be deported on Wednesday from Israel to Jordan, but calls have been renewed for the New Zealand government to step up on its commitments to responding to the situation in Gaza.

We are just three weeks into this year but 2026 has seen the direction of American foreign policy become more alarming on the global stage, with the kidnapping of the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro preceding threats upon Greenland, bringing them into open diplomatic conflict with their ostensible NATO allies.

As the state that has often been described as the global policeman shows increasing disregard for international law people have been left wondering what is in store in the future and if another international leader can take their place.

To get perspective on what the future international order could look like, Wire Host Manny spoke to the Co-Director of Global Studies at the University of Auckland, Chris Ogden.

Air New Zealand Shares, Teacher Training Boosts, and the New Zealand Crime and Victims Survey w/ The National Party's Ryan Hamilton: 3 March, 2026

Last week, National’s coalition partners in ACT and NZ First found themselves arguing over Air New Zealand; Specifically, over whether or not, during a time of struggle, the government should sell their shares in the company. National has sed that they are not currently considering any moves surrounding these shares.

Education Minister Erica Stanford announced yet more teacher training initiatives in order to bolster the education workforce, in addition to what she says is already the highest number of teachers since 2004, and the highest number of teachers in training.

The government has also spoken about the release of the newest New Zealand Crime and Victims survey, claiming that violent crime statistics going down proves the effectiveness of their tough on crime approach.
