Solid Steel (6th April) In Hour 1 celebrating the release of the new Dr Octagon album 'Moosebumps: An Exploration Into Modern Day Horripilation', we welcome back Dan The Automator, who first appeared on Solid Steel in 2000 and is one third of the trio behind Dr Octagon alongside Kool Keith and DJ QBert. The first Dr Octagon album dropped over 20 years ago to great acclaim and two tracks from that album 'Blue Flowers' and 'Earth People' feature in the mix. We also hear 'Black Hole Son' from the brand new album which is out today, plus a whole host of tracks produced by Dan The Automator and Prince doing his incredible cover of 'Creep' by Radiohead.
In Hour 2 we hand over to Adam Freeland who has been producing music for over two decades, which included running his Marine Parade label out of Brighton, a 10 year residency at Fabric and nomination for a Grammy. Now he is part of The Acid, which includes RY X from The Howling. He told us; 
"This mix is really just an acknowledgement of my lifelong love of arpeggiators and excitement for this new wave of arpeggiated synth stuff combined with some deeper drones and desert psych influences. I’m living totally off grid way out in the Mohave desert near Joshua tree, where this mix was recorded. My studio is solar powered ( no other option out here), there’s an exhilarating feeling to know that the photons running through the circuit boards of my machines emanated from the surface the Sun just 8 mins and 20 seconds prior. Of late, I’ve been more focused on my band ‘The Acid’  and pursuing my lifelong dream of living off grid and figuring out how to build a house than DJing. Incase you missed it we ( The Acid) put out a debut album called ‘Liminal’ and more recently we scored a documentary film  ‘the bomb’  a documentary about the story of nuclear weapons. We have been touring film festivals, performing the score in a 360 immersive environment live to the film. Akala was raised in Camden, north-west London with Scottish, English and Jamaican whakapapa. He positions himself as having been racialised as black despite being raised by his white solo-mum. Akala is a rapper, a historian, a political thinker and now an author. He was in Aotearoa this week for events in Christchurch, Dunedin and the Auckland Writers Festival (which is still going). Lillian Hanly was lucky enough to spend some time with him before he gave his talk on his new book Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of Empire. They sat outside Aotea Center just after Akala had finished speaking to a huge group of students about Shakespeare - because, on top of his work on race and class, and holding two honourary doctorates, he owns The Hip-Hop Shakespeare Company. This is a 'music theatre production company aimed at exploring the social, cultural and linguistic parallels between the works of William Shakespeare and that of modern day hip-hop artists'. A number of people actually came up during the interview asking for his autograph.

As Akala positions himself in most interviews, Lillian decided to start the interview by positioning herself - as a Pākehā woman raised with Te Reo Māori as her first language. This positioning she also believes is important as it is the lens through which she sees the world, and informs the work she does. While reading Natives in preparation one of the first things that jumped out at her was Akala’s statement in the introduction, “I was born into these currents, I did not create or invent them and I make no claims to objectivity. I find the whole idea that we can transcend our experiences; and take a totally unbiased look at the world to be totally ridiculous, yet that’s what many historians and academics claim to do.” News media too, claim objectivity, states Lillian. This is where the interview begins.

In the US, the Food and Drug Administration recently expanded its blood donation eligibility criteria for men who have sex with men (MSM).

The FDA said it will now recommend "individual risk-based questions" be asked to every blood donor, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender, or sex. 

Restrictions on blood donation for MSM have been in place since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. But many now view these restrictions as discriminatory, unnecessarily restrictive, and inconsistent with modern, HIV prevention approaches.

The UK and Canada similarly lifted some restrictions on MSM donating blood. But Aotearoa has not followed. 

The NZ Blood Service would not be interviewed but did provide a statement to 95bFM. 

They said they recognise this is an important issue for many New Zealanders. And as more countries move to a deferral criteria based on individual behaviours it will increase the body of evidence necessary for New Zealand Blood Service to make an informed recommendation to Medsafe about changes to our own donor behaviour deferral criteria.

They said they have been working with the University of Auckland on its Sex and Prevention of Transmission study and hope the results of this study will provide vital evidence-based New Zealand data that will also help inform our future recommendations.

News and Editorial Director Jessica Hopkins spoke to Tony Scriamporn, a PhD student from the school of population health and medicine at the University of Auckland, who is investigating attitudes and behaviours towards blood donation amongst gay and bisexual men. Scriamporn is also a part of the SPOTS study. 

She started off the interview by asking Scriamporn what these changes in the US mean for the country's blood supply.
