Despite efforts to preserve endangered animals, trafficking has increased in some parts of the world by an estimated 5000% according to conservationists and the poaching is pushing some animals to the very brink of extinction. In 2014, 46 countries signed the London Declaration which was set up to work towards ending wildlife trafficking through law enforcement and cross-country cooperation. Wildlife trafficking is a multi-billion-dollar industry that has reportedly helped fund Al-Qaeda-related groups. What is the scope of the problem? What should be done about it? This week, it’s all about abortion. The first reading of the government’s abortion reform bill is set to go to first reading today. It would take abortion out of the Crimes Act, meaning there is no test for abortion up to 20 weeks - and from then on, a statutory test focusing on the mental and physical wellbeing of the woman. It’s a slightly more conservative version of one of three tests proposed by the Law Commission. But, after the Bill was announced earlier this week, NZ First has announced plans to seek a referendum on the issue. So, what does it all mean for the Bill? The Minister talks to Stewart Sowman-Lund.

This week on Green Desk, Mitch speaks to University of Canterbury’s Jo Carpenter who recently published her thesis on seed dispersal in Aotearoa’s flightless birds. The research had a rather specific focus on Weka, which are often be seen as a nuisance amongst campers and trampers, however Jo’s research has discovered that Weka are excellent seed dispersers and are essential to the survival of certain species. The research also showed the significant implications of human interaction with Weka, where those which experienced interaction through camping or picnicking tended to be 40 and 50% less effective in their role functions. Mitchell and Jo discuss the findings of her research and begins by asking her how it began and what she was set out to achieve.
