This week Marcus discusses with James everyting from space exploration to natural disasters.
Marcus starts off by telling us about the latest space missions to be announced, which will be heading to explore Venus. With the conditions far harsher than Mars, different challenges are at the forefront.
Next, Marcus explains a dilemma occuring between experts around COVID-19 variants, children, and whether thry need to be vaccinated straight away. Differing opinions mean some say children are not at risk, while others say they are holding grounds for new variants to grow.
To finish everything up, Marcus talks about a landslide which pccured in India at the start of the year and some of the statistics around the slide.
On this week's Dear Science, Frances Wright was joined by AUT Professor Allan Blackman. They began by talking about the serious but hilarious Ig Nobel Prizes and then moved onto research on toilet training cows from the University of Auckland. They finished up by talking about the food scientists who have found the key to perfectly smooth chocolate.
On the 18th of October voting for Forest and Bird’s ‘Bird of the Year’ opens across the country. It’s an extremely popular competition where Aotearoa’s native birds are set against each other in a race to the finish. The competition gained 55,000 votes last year with the Kakapo taking the win. It’s always a bit of fun, but it has a serious side too. Climate change and habitat loss are huge threats to Aotearoa with about 80% of native birds threatened or at risk of extinction. The competition helps to raise awareness about native birds and what the changes in their habitats mean. On the Wire this week, Frances Wright talked with Lissy Fehnker-Heather who is Forest and Bird’s regional manager for Auckland and Coromandel and Spokesperson for Bird of the Year about the history of the competition and what it means for conservation in Aotearoa.
Louis spoke to comparative linguist Dr. Martine Robbeets about the origins of Transeurasian languages and DOC's Aaron Flemming about progress on the Hump Ridge Track.
Charlie talked with Shine's Holly Carrington about family violence in light of a new report and the Minister for Conservation, Kiri Allen, about the new marine mammal sanctuary in the Bay of Islands.
Finally, Christina was joined by Glenda Fryer, as she finished her six-week segment with the Waitemata Local Board.
Alex kicks off with Stephen Noakes from the University of Auckland about the proposed Solomon Islands - China security agreement.
This is followed by Alex speaking with ACT’s Brooke van Velden about her view on the Solomon Islands - China security agreement as well as alleged human rights abuses by Russian forces in Ukraine.
Frances speaks with Cameron Mulgan on Eurovision, giving an update on the situation in Ukraine, focussing on the war crimes in Bucha. They also talk Hungary and Serbia election results, the upcoming presidential election in France, and finish off speaking about the new Tesla factory in Berlin.
Stella then speaks with Lauren Fong from Icehouse, the manager of ArcAngel the largest fund in New Zealand dedicated specifically to investing in female start-up leaders
Finally we have a piece from reporter Corey Fuimaono who speaks to NZUSA President Andrew Lessels on Vic Uni's recent vote to leave his organisation and recent reforms that are now taking place to keep members happy.
