Public Clay w/ artist Fiona Jack: 20th September, 2024

Public Clay is an exhibition by Fiona Jack currently on at Melanie Roger Gallery. 

Fiona Jack is a conceptual artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau where she is the Head of School at Te Waka Tūhura Elam School of Fine Art at Waipapa Taumata Rau the University of Auckland. 

As Jack’s first solo exhibition with Melanie Roger Gallery, the exhibition presents a new series of ‘earth posters’ made in collaboration with Naarm/Melbourne-based poet, Sholto Buck, as well as a new collaborative work with Tāmaki Makaurau-based artist, Elizabeth Pointon.

Sofia spoke to Fiona about this exhibition, her practice, and these collaborative projects.

Making My Way Home w/ Veronica Herber: 15th November, 2024

Making My Way Home is an exhibition showing new work by Veronica Herber currently on at Melanie Roger Gallery. 

As Herber’s first solo exhibition with Melanie Roger Gallery, the show is exhibiting new works of hers made from hand torn pieces of Japanese Washi Foto tape and graphite powder. 

The exhibition borrows its title from Herber’s late husband Derek Browne of dDub’s second album, Medicine Man. Herber too has sourced the titles for her work from his lyrics, describing the way she incorporates his work as a way that the two are still collaborating.

Various Artists w/ Beth and Sofia: January 31st, 2025

Today on Various Artists!

Beth had a kōrero with Aotearoa photographer Murray Savidan about his new book STOP: Look Both Ways (Ugly Hill Press). The book showcases some of the best of Murray’s photographs from the 1960s to now. STOP: Look Both Ways is out now at independent bookstores near you.

Sofia had a kōrero with writer, director, and producer of documentary The Haka Party Incident, Katie Wolfe, about the largely forgotten piece of history of the Haka Party Incident and her filmmaking process. 

The Haka Party Incident is now showing in cinemas across Aotearoa. If you want to hear more from Katie Wolfe about the film, there is also a Q&A on the 6th February (Waitangi Day) at Matakana Cinemas.

Dance choreographr Xin Ji joins Beth in the studio to discuss Body Show which is a physical dance theatre piece as well as his debut solo show. The Body Show is on at Q Theatre from the 18th-22nd February as part of Auckland Pride Festival. Tickets from Q Theatre’s website.

Ruin on the Cascade w/ Ayesha Green: 16th May, 2025

Ruin on the Cascade is Ayesha Green’s (Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga, Kāi Tahu, Pākehā) first solo exhibition with Season Aotearoa. 

The title refers to a faux ruin in Stowe Gardens, a Georgian landscape garden in Buckinghamshire established in the early 18th century by British army officer and Whig politician Richard Temple, the 1st Viscount Cobham. Using the Stowe Gardens as a framework, Green explores a range of subjects, including class, land use, knowledge systems, ethics, national identity, and British imperialism through her painting and sculptural practice.

Alag w/ Tarika Sabherwal: 27th June, 2025

Alag is artist Tarika Sabherwal’s first solo exhibition at Season Aoteaora. 

The title itself has a double meaning, by which it can be read as either alāg, as in the Hindi word for separate, apart, parted, or different; or a lag, as in a lag in communication or a glitch in some sort of system. 

The images are drawn from Hindi iconography, continuing a theme in Sabherwal’s practice of exploring and reimagining well-known motifs, as seen in paintings of horses and felines, for example. 

The works show a continuation of a side of Sabherwal’s practice which uses an airbrush tool to paint onto raw canvas, creating a dyed effect and bold contrast.

This week we heard from Jeremy Cosmo Potts, about his first ever solo art show, which is a sort of hilarious/slightly hideous selection paintings and drawings, full of frogs, crab claws, watering cans, sex and debauchery. Then we talked to Sarah Mohawk about her show at Window Gallery, called Electronic Super Highway. Its stems from a paper titled ‘Autonomous Vehicles Need Experimental Ethics: Are We Ready for Utilitarian Cars?’ and explores the ethics involved when a self driving car is about to hit a group of people. Finally we hear from Dan Sanders about his contribution to the show titled "I hate you, I hate you, I hate you, because I don’t hate you; I love you…", which is associated with the Auckland Pride Festival.
