DJ Sir Vere 1991 to 97; 2002 Phil Bell found his way to b via punk rock, and from there to a lifelong record buying addiction. After producing a New Order fanzine in the early 1980s and learning the art of live DJing from his Dad, he became a renowned club DJ in the late 80s. Then, along with DLT, Slave & Base, he founded the "world famous" Trueschool Hip Hop Show, and branched out into careers in television and print media. Earlier this year, New Zealand popstar Lorde became the latest in a long line of artists to pull out of shows in Israel. This came after pressure from the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, including two New Zealand activists who called on the singer to change her mind about playing in the country. The activists were later ordered to pay $12,000 by an Israeli court under a 2011 ‘anti-boycott’ law. Sam Smith spoke with Mark LeVine about the impact of BDS and the ongoing issue facing musicians on whether or not they should perform in Israel.

Ever since the killing of George Floyd, the city of Portland has witnessed consistent protests and civic action demanding police reforms. However, recently, camouflaged federal authorities without identification badges have begun arresting protesters in the city, while the Department of Homeland Security has deployed unmarked SUV’s to detain protesters. The White House has confirmed its order to send federal authorities to Portland and is threatening to send them to other American cities. Local elected officials, including the Mayor of Portland, have demanded that federal agents leave the city. Doug Becker speaks with Jennifer L. Selin, Nadine Strossen, and David S. Meyer about the legal and political implications of this, as well as the implications for democracy and civil liberties.
