Earlier today, the International Comparison of Modern Medicines published a report looking at the public funding of modern medicine in 20 OECD countries. The report showed that New Zealand was in desperate need of access to modern medicine. Patient Voices Aotearoa has long been campaigning for a double and triple in funding for access to modern medicine. The organisation presented their petition to parliament in May 2021, which called for immediate funding. Joe talks to Fiona Tolich from Patient Voice Aotearoa about this need for funding and why it’s so crucial amidst the current COVID environment.
In 1988, New Zealand became the first country in the world to introduce a national, government-funded needle exchange programme for people who inject legal and illegal drugs.
New data has shown that the New Zealand Needle Exchange Programme has doubled its return in twenty years and has reduced the need for spending on treatment for HIV, Hepatitis B and C and other injection injuries.

The Hawke's Bay Regional Council commissioned a team to survey dotterel populations in the region. The team led by ornithologist Nikki McArthur walked 320km of coastline, and found that the population had doubled in the past decade, from 86 birds to 222. It was completed in 2021, and the results have just been released. Stella speaks to George Hobson, the chief policy lead for Forest and Bird youth, about the increase.
