Karen Rubado, has just handed in her Masters of Fine Arts submission (congrats!) titled Weaving Structural Improvisation into Contemporary Art, but what does this mean, you ask? Karan's work consists of a myriad of things such as including old power cables, string, discarded metal and ribbon, interwoven together to create intricate wall-hanging pieces. If you want to check out this beautiful work, head to the Elam Grad Show where you can find all things ~art~, yay!
Today on the Green Desk, Bronwyn had a kо̄rero with Phil Jones from the Sustainable Business Network about their GulfX project which aims to restore the mauri of the Hauraki Gulf. The recently published State of our Gulf report highlighted the increasingly dire state of the marine park. Some of the more shocking statistics of the included the occurrence of ten mass mortality events due to fish and shellfish in the gulf in the past ten years, and nine toxic algal blooms. This is due in part to the fact that 3,730 tonnes of nitrogen flow into the Firth of Thames from rivers in Hauraki each year. Crayfish are also functionally extinct in the Gulf, despite once being one of its most abundant species.
While overfishing is undeniable a serious cause of biodiversity loss, the GulfX project chose to focus on some of the lesser-known terrestrial sources of environmental degradation such as sediment, plastic and heavy metals.
Phil began by telling Bronwyn what we mean when we talk about the Hauraki Gulf:
With the inception of Hard ‘n Fast Joints in 2018, Clay Louis, alongside Leo CW formed the collective Eleventh Realm, focusing on bringing the heavier side of dance music to Tāmaki Makaurau. The pair went on to create Ultra Sound as their mainstay and most successful party series in Whammy Bar, transforming the space into an immersive dance experience through minimal lighting, industrial scrap-metal installations, and carefully selected line ups. Recently he has claimed a fortnightly Sunday show on Mouthfull radio ‘Terra Incognita’ which serves as an outlet for ambient, downtempo, and abstract finds more suited for at-home listening. At the club, Clay Louis’ sets are high energy, spanning a unique array of driving techno, trance, breaks, and experimental club that can be heard reflected in his own productions - With an existing cache of self released productions, his forthcoming material showcases a range of influences tied together with a deep understanding of rhythm. Clay Louis' most recent release, 'Visions Of A Friend', for Teethclippers' 'Don't Bite Your Tongue' compilation, is featured in his mix for Related Articles.
