Community Housing Aotearoa is an incorporated society made up of the non-profit community housing providers across Aotearoa. There are more than 90 providers across the country working locally to deliver housing solutions for families who face affordability challenges, from homelessness to providing pathways into homeownership. Oscar Peress spoke to the Deputy Chief Executive Chris Glaudell of the organisation to find out more about what they do that sets them apart from government. Oscar started by asking what a not-for-profit housing provider is.

Today, applications open for the programme Whai Kāinga, Whai Oranga, a $730 million dollar Māori Housing Supply and infrastructure investment that will provide support for Māori to determine their own housing solutions, across the entire housing continuum, and deliver affordable rentals. The $730m fund combines investment from Budget 2021 ($380M), and the Māori Infrastructure Fund ($350m), the largest investment seen in Māori Housing.

Zazi spoke to Associate Minister of Housing, Hon Peeni Henare, about this fund in more detail, to hear more about what he has to say about Whai Kāinga, Whai Oranga, and why it is an important programme.

Housing Minister Chris Bishop and Associate Housing Minister Tama Potaka announced the government’s release of the new social housing investment plan which aims to shift to a “needs-based, data driven approach”.

The new flexible fund includes $41 million dollars in operating funding over the next four years, and the government have stated they expect to support up to 770 social homes and affordable rentals in the initial phase.

As well, Health Minister Simeon Brown last week announced a Cabinet decision to stop new prescriptions for puberty blockers for young people identifying as trans or experiencing gender dysphoria. 

The rule, in effect from 19th of December, is based on recommendations from a UK National Health Service review which determined that the evidence to the benefits or risks of the treatment was “remarkably weak”.
The government is expected to pause new prescriptions until the outcome of a clinical trial being conducted in the UK, expected to be completed in 2031. 

Wire Host Sara spoke with MP Carl Bates about all of these topics, firstly by asking about the flexible fund which will replace the so-called ‘patchwork of programmes’ in place for social housing.
