Show starts with a few old and familiar tunes from REM, The Hangdogs, Pixies doing Neil Young kind of thing, then dips into plenty of brand new tunes mainly from out of South Carolina thanks to a sampler I found on-line. Cool bands like Kid Trails, She Returns from War and Slow Motion Cowboys. Then disaster strikes!! An attempt to get fruity with the '70's vibe goes awry about halfway through the show - but stick in there 'cos it comes back with more new tunes from the likes of Late Night TV some lovely local stuff from Kendall Elise and Emily Fairlight, a Lone Justice blast from the past and Star Anna who I haven't played for a while. SO yeah, nice show with a messy interlude. Aroha mai !
Pretty casual approach this week, no rhyme or reason just The Budrows, The Weakerthans, 4 Gun Ridge, The Heavy Horses. Barry Saunders and Delaney Davidson, Kendal Ellise, The Echo Oh's, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Little Feat and a heap more including a test pilot for a show that's all double-barrelled first names, Emmy Lou Harris, Mary Lou Lord and Jessica Lee Wilkes...listen to this space.
Plenty of variety on the show this week, starts off with some oldies, JJ Cale, Michelle Shocked & Dwight Yoakam. Then into The Hacks, White Owl Red and Sleepy Eyes Nelson. Some interesting quite sleazy blues from Israel with Noya Sol, the fantastically dark and lonely Doc Feldman and The LD50 and a cool band called Late Night TV. Went for a rummage through station vinyl and found a Lone Justice LP and a Jason & The Scorchers EP - and unfortunately played them. Some parts of the '80's have not travelled well in this genre! Meanwhile back in the present century, locals Kendal Ellise & Emily Fairlight. A pretty groovy outing in spanish with Gatomajodo. Some Old '97's, Johnny Miles and The Kilometres , Slow Motion Cowboys then back into the station vinyl for The Triffids(!), live recordings of Marlon, Townes and Social Distirtion before returning to the station vinyl which redeemed itself with the very interesting Warumpi Band from Northern Territory Australia. There's more too of course.
Epic CSNY version of Southern Man from the awesome live album 4 Way Street to start the show off and then a musical stumble through Son Volt, Holly Williams, newly discovered Zoe Wilcox, some Johnny Cash spoken word and a nice latin vibe through Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros and Calexico. The badly spelled, found in a bargain bin with a truck on the cover Defibulators turn out all right. Reb Fountain, Kendal Elise bring us Brighton and Papukura respectively, The Eastern unleash the rugby league club and the show finishes with a brand new song from Dirtwire.
Some dark musings on the State of The US of A from Ryan Bingham, Drive By Truckers and Purple Mountains as well as a couple of genuine New Zealand Folks songs from Louis Jarlov and The Lonesome, and Piha Crew The Loggerboys. Song of the year from Tami Neilson. Kendall Ellise, Lone Justice and 1970's beaut - Bachman Turner Overdrive fresh out of the bargain bin.
Last show for the year with a slightly reflective, christmassy vibe and a few favorites from the year. New Marlon, and special recorded in the lounge Marlon. A few from both of the Drive By Truckers 2020 albums, and a couple from new favorite son of the border radio show, Sammy Brue. Brand new Kendal Elise and yes, a special xmas cover of Wham by Taylor Swift.
Roped in at the last minute bringing the brand new tunes and one or two old familiar friends. Mainly artists from New West records, but also new Los Lobos and James McMurtry, and new local tunes from Swampland and Kendal Ellise. Also a nice in the studio performance of Bob Dylans Dont think twice by Raylee Bradford.
