Vape Stores Cluster Around Schools In New Zealand w/ Ronan Payinda: May 07, 2025

This week, a study was launched which looked into the location of vape stores around schools in Aotearoa. In the study it was found that 44% of schools in New Zealand have a vape store within a one-kilometer radius, and that 13% have a dedicated store within 300 meters.

This is despite a legislation being passed by the government in 2023, which banned specialist vape stores from opening within 300 meters of schools and marae, the legislation however, allowed existing vape shops to continue operating.

Ronan Payinda, a fourth-year medical student at the University of Auckland, who led the study, says that he saw the explosion of vaping while he was at school in Northland, and felt that New Zealand was failing as a society to grapple with its potentially serious health effects.

Kith and Kin w/ Season Gallery co-curator, Francis McWhannell: 2nd August, 2024

Kith and Kin is a new group exhibition at Season Gallery with brunelle dias, Tony Guo, Levi Kereama, Claudia Kogachi, and the esteemed Jacqueline Fahey.

Testifying to the importance of strengthening community, Kith and Kin comprises stylistically diverse figure-based paintings exploring notions of family and friendship, ancestry and diaspora, identity and belonging. 

Emblems of faith, evocative interiors, fields seen from the sky, and items of food both everyday and symbolic can be seen as common elements in the works.

Sofia spoke to Season Gallery co-curator, Francis McWhannell, about Kith and Kin, starting the interview asking him about the process for selecting artists.

Joe, Frances, and Liam's Wonderful WOMAD Weekend: March 24th, 2023

On Friday last week, myself (Frances), Joe and Liam jumped in the car and drove down the West Coast to WOMAD. 

WOMAD is an international arts festival. The central aim of WOMAD is to celebrate the world's many forms of music, arts and dance. This year saw a line up with the likes of Youssu N’Dor, Avantdale Bowling Club, Sampa the Great and a whole bunch more. 

There was also a range of food, market stalls, and workshops. Interviews were taking place with writers, vendors were selling salt grinders, and local chefs came together to sell food from Venezuelan Arepas to Hungarian Langos.  

After pitching some tents in the mud, we grabbed our mics and headed out to enjoy the festival and talk to the people of WOMAD.
