On Monday Cabinet announced the approval of regulations to ban the sale and manufacture of synthetic microbeads.
The government says the regulation will come into force in six months, although the New World, Pak'nSave and Four Square supermarket chains stopped selling products with microbeads from July.
Penalties for ignoring the ban may include fines of up to $100,000, with the Environmental protection Authority enforcing it.

On the 23rd of March, under alert level 2, the Department of Conservation closed its hut and campsite bookings, and back-country huts closed under alert level three. However the Department has now announced that bookings for the Great Walks will reopen between the 9-11th of June, with the exception of the Milford and Routeburn tracks which are still undergoing storm repairs. Booking for all other DOC huts and campsites will repen on the 25th of June.

Taumata Arowai has already been established as the new water regulator and aims to strengthen regulation around the three waters - drinking water, wastewater and stormwater.
