An independent panel was appointed by the Minister of Justice in May to lead a review of Aotearoa’s electoral law.
The independent electoral review will look at election rules such as the voting age and overseas voting funding of political parties.
The panel is looking for people to share their thoughts on what could make our electoral system better before it makes its final recommendations to the Government at the end of 2023.

On Tuesday legislation was passed by the House of Representatives allowing for a large-scale housing development on 11.7 hectares of the reserve in Tāmaki,enabling local iwi Ngāti Pāoa to build 300 houses on the reserve land as part of its Treaty settlement. Concerns have been raised by Auckland Mayor Phill Goff and Chairperson of the Maungakiekie Tamaki Local Board regarding the government’s use of special legislation to lift reserve status outside normal statutory processes. In the last week, RNZ has come under fire for its use of Te Reo with Don Brash among others annoyed by its presence on national radio, and television. Brash says he doesn’t understand the language, says it has no value to him, and that it is being rammed down peoples throats. Other people like media commentator John Drinnan say RNZ does not have a strategy for its use of Te Reo, with no reason given as to why it is being used and what is being said.
