Kith and Kin is a new group exhibition at Season Gallery with brunelle dias, Tony Guo, Levi Kereama, Claudia Kogachi, and the esteemed Jacqueline Fahey.

Testifying to the importance of strengthening community, Kith and Kin comprises stylistically diverse figure-based paintings exploring notions of family and friendship, ancestry and diaspora, identity and belonging. 

Emblems of faith, evocative interiors, fields seen from the sky, and items of food both everyday and symbolic can be seen as common elements in the works.

Sofia spoke to Season Gallery co-curator, Francis McWhannell, about Kith and Kin, starting the interview asking him about the process for selecting artists.

Studio X is an exhibition by Ōtepoti-based artist Graham Fletcher, currently on at Gow Langsford Gallery. 

Fletcher is known for his representations of architecture, interiors, art, and the domestic, bringing together contemporary and customary forms, and intermixing Western high art and indigenous traditions in his paintings. 

Inspired by the likes of Mattisse’s The Pink Studio (1911), in this new body of work, Fletcher reflects on the intimate artist’s studio as his locational subject, transforming the physical space of artmaking into art itself. 

Not depicting any one specific studio or space, the paintings extend an interest in Fletcher’s practice in the ways in which he can visually communicate complex cultural discourses between Western and non-Western settings, often in a contemporary Pacific and New Zealand context, speaking to his own Samoan and European heritage.

Freya Burnett is a Tāmaki-based multidisciplinary artist whose work delves into the thematic exploration of magic and female ecstasy through her sculpture and immersive moving image installation practice. 

Her current exhibition Essence on at the Arts House Trust at Pah Homestead, presented in association with Plomacy Gallery, showcases a mesmerising textural landscape of the senses, through projected imagery and a sonic soundscape created by Fergus Waveforms.

Essence pulls viewers into its feminine vocabulary of imagery that shifts and morphs in space through each stage of the work's existence. Dew-dropped botanical imagery slipping into mirrored jewels and reflecting light like one and the same. Blurring the lines between objects and pulling them into their own enchanting visual realm.

Coming together in an ephemeral fugue, Furgus’s constructed sonic soundscape pulls the work further into its own interior atmosphere. Creating a space of layered visual languages that usher viewers into an alternative world that seeks for a conscious and passionate embrace of enchantment.
